Once you're out of boot camp and all that initial training, how strict are the higher ups on servicemembers staying in shape? Are there regular PT tests? Do you risk a discharge if you're too fat?

I normally agree with Scruffy but in this instance I don’t as it applies to this particular issue. BMI testing, by PT instructors who went to a two hour class and using calipers, is wildly inaccurate. Back in the day, when I was a wee lad. I was a y’all, skinny PT God. During Basic I was in a position to get an award (and a cash bonus) as I maxed every portion of the then rather extensive PT test. The “600 club” was kind of a big deal.

Then some asshat PT Instructor took my BMI and declared me “obese”. fricker couldn’t even get a good caliper reading on the side of my thigh until he grabbed a portion of my quad and measured that. I am pretty sure I still have bruises from where he grabbed some internal organs to get an abdomen reading.

If they want to make real policy decisions based off of BMI, they should be putting the kids in a float tank to get numbers.

A. Anecdotal.

B. To repeat, neither the BMI calculations nor the military workout regimen has changed in 8 years, yet the rate of obesity is up 6%.

Are you saying there are just that many more service members adding that muscle the last 8 years?

FYI, the obesity threshold for a 6'0" tall person is 221 lbs.

6 foot flat and 221 lbs. is obese.

Lose weight.
Honestly it seems reasonable to me. I’m 5’9”(and a half) and I’m 175. Neither fat nor skinny, smoke a pack a day, eat like shite and can’t remember the last time I worked out voluntarily. I’m still pretty sure I’m under the obesity threshold for my weight.

25.8 BMI, you are not "too" overweight.

But you're still going to die quite young

25.8

You are right at the overweight cutoff.

According to BMI, you're just barely in the Overweight category.

But, I don't think it is your weight that is going to kill you.

That’s a BMI of 25.8....puts you in the overweight category(but not the obese category)

Get under 25 and you are out of the overweight category

If you saw him walking around Disneyworld though, he wouldn't look fat in comparison. And that is the issue.

Meh. I’m comfortable like this. Living healthy sounds terrible.

Depends on service but the Marines were strict. All services do regular PT tests. I saw a few get kicked out because they couldn't get their weight down. That's very rare though because once you start to gain weight they put you on a strict exercise plan. It's usually someone that gets hurt and can't exercise that's at risk for being discharged for being overweight.

oh absolutely

I work in O&G

in an office of about 60 people, there are like 4 people that I would categorize as "not fat"

at least 20 are morbidly obese

its sad

You believe that this inaccuracy is at such a level that the results would skew by percentage points >5?

You would also have to believe that the PT instructors got suddenly worse at taking BMI measurements in the last few years.

You are several tiers away from "living healthy"

You're in the "suicidal lifestyle" tier.

Cut out smoking, eat a tiny portion of vegetables each day, and walk for 20 minutes a day and you'll probably add 10 years to your life and feel 10x better.

You'd be surprised what 1 hour of active exercise a day can do for your life.

Seems some aren't as proud of the uniform they wear as others. Don't think you can be proud of representing the Navy while obese in their uniform.

Exactly.

The only way anyone could justify that opinion is if they could show that there were massive swings in the percentages between previous years.

Not 1-2%, but 5-10+%, as we see in this study.

Walking, running, bike riding.

It doesn’t take much.

Very calming too.

People don’t have to hit the weights.

All it requires is cardio and eating somewhat healthier.
