Happened to me. Going from poor college kid to an all you can eat facility is amazing. Never got fat, but definitely gained some weight.

As a lifelong civilian this blows my mind. If there's any place that could get away with "corrective action" for being overweight it would seem like the military. Have movies and tv lied to me? They can make you run until you puke and do 100s of pushups in the rain but they can't keep you from accessing the buffet?

Thought the same thing.

I feel like they should have weigh ins and protocols to punish overweight people until they make weight.

The percentage of people who are outside the parameters of using BMI due to muscle mass and other factors is a significantly small portion that could likely be managed through the margin of error.

in general population? yeah i agree completely

in the military? i’d bet that percentage is considerably higher.

i just looked at the chart.
Myles freaking Brennan is considered to be overweight according to BMI.

I bet even combat arms is over represented and is not indicative of actual fat percentage because there will be more athletes in those MOS.

My BMI is 25.6. I'm 6'2" 200 lbs. and should lose 10-15 lbs. People call me skinny and I am not skinny. According to my doctor, I am just over the threshold for acceptable weight. I am clinically overweight and am one of the skinnier people in my office.

My BMI is 23.

Walking around the South though, you'd think my BMI would be closer to 16.

Instead of laughing how about you provide your experiences? That’s right—you’re some fat frick who sits in an office all day tracking HS athlete stats and are part of the BMI problem.

I’ve been bodybuilding since I was 15, was combat arms in the military in the last 10 years and there was no epidemic of fat people running around base. It’s the non combat arms MOS that are relevant here

To echo what Scruffy already said, the workout routines in the military and BMI calculations haven't changed in 8 years and it is still going up.

The Marine Corp had a 2.3% obesity rate in 2011.

That increased ~6% over 8 years.

Do you honestly believe that there was a 6% increase in those with exceptional muscle mass outside of the parameters for BMI or that there was a 6% increase in obesity?

One is FAR easier to accept.

Do you think that that additional 6% of the Marine Corp is a bunch of Myles Brennans?

Why is this such a contentious issue for some of you?

Scruffy does not understand why people reject this info as if to avoid the implications.

But the percentage of obese people in the military is way up.

Because 95% of the people on this website are probably at the very least clinically overweight and they refuse to admit it.

Our entire country has been brainwashed.

Truth.

This obesity epidemic isn’t going anywhere and the South is the radioactive zone.

The United States Navy has eliminated fried food and sugary drinks on its ships. It is keeping base gyms and fitness centers open all night. But its sailors keep getting fatter: A new Defense Department study found that 22 percent of them — roughly one in every five — now qualifies as obese.

...The Marine Corps, which has the youngest force and maintains the toughest physical fitness standards, was the leanest in the study, with 8.3 percent of Marines over the obesity threshold. The Army came in at 17.4 percent — the same as the militarywide average — and the Air Force was at 18.1 percent.
I bet if we broke down the services by gender it would be pretty close to these same numbers.

I normally agree with Scruffy but in this instance I don’t as it applies to this particular issue. BMI testing, by PT instructors who went to a two hour class and using calipers, is wildly inaccurate. Back in the day, when I was a wee lad. I was a y’all, skinny PT God. During Basic I was in a position to get an award (and a cash bonus) as I maxed every portion of the then rather extensive PT test. The “600 club” was kind of a big deal.

Then some asshat PT Instructor took my BMI and declared me “obese”. fricker couldn’t even get a good caliper reading on the side of my thigh until he grabbed a portion of my quad and measured that. I am pretty sure I still have bruises from where he grabbed some internal organs to get an abdomen reading.

If they want to make real policy decisions based off of BMI, they should be putting the kids in a float tank to get numbers.

You know who loves the obesity epidemic which lends to type 2 diabetes and eventual kidney failure?

Owners of dialysis centers. Those things seem to keep popping up everywhere now.

FYI, the obesity threshold for a 6'0" tall person is 221 lbs.

6 foot flat and 221 lbs. is obese.

Lose weight.

You believe that this inaccuracy is at such a level that the results would skew by percentage points >5?

What kind of margin of error are we looking at here then?

Also, Scruffy would expect to see mass swings like that when comparing previous years to each other as well, which isn’t the case.

Your opinion is heavily anecdotal and is usually accounted for through mass numbers.

I was in the Marine Corps and the Marines that were in the best shape had office jobs. I can't speak for other services but from my experience the pogue Marines had more time to work out than grunts.
