SFP, it’s disappointing seeing you peddle this stuff. Usually you are better than that
The very fact that this dude found *2300* jobs to apply for is literal proof that there is no shortage of openings

You need to educate yourself. Start here:
Ghost Job
The 2300 number means nothing.
The landscape has changed.

They have no concept of the AI gatekeeping going on before you even get an interview, then the multi-stage interview process.
This. so much this. i spent the last year trying to find a gig. like, actual, honest to god trying. Made multiple resumes using the best AI tools at multiple sites to get them in as good as shape as possible for submission to the AI gatekeepers. used AI to help me write multiple cover letters and i would then tailor them to the role. I treated every single application like it was a term paper at Harvard. 100 apps later, i got two phones calls and one in person interview for a PM role that i would have turned down 15 years ago.
In person networking cracked the code. i punch way above my weight in person. Most of us do, especially us rascals from South LA. The job hunt these days is so comically demeaning it almost should be cause for a revolution in and of itself. And, like you said, unless you've had to do this like your next mortgage payment depends on it, you have no idea what the struggle is like out there.

Amazon and their 3rd party contractors are hiring delivery drivers in droves. 4 10’s at $20-$24 an hour with benefits and probable OT. 3 days paid training then wheels up. Perfect seasonal bridge job if you’re in limbo career wise.
Only on paper. I’ve been out of work for a year and have applied to Amazon for a full time with benefits position and haven’t gotten on. They have a distribution center 2 miles from my house. Luckily, I have saved well and have another revenue stream to keep me level. I know several friends and former colleagues that are well over a year unemployed.

Let me be clear. I don't have personal experience here. I own my own business. But I've read a LOT on the issue, listened to podcasts, and watched a ton of YT videos about it.

Well somehow hundreds of thousands of people apply for and get jobs every month
You are committing the fallacy of composition
You are assuming that, because the job market is weird in technical niche industries, it is weird overall
Nobody is having trouble getting jobs in things like insurance analyst, data entry, utility billing specialist, customer support, health insurance, etc

And those job openings often stay “open” making it appear more jobs are available.
Is this really that hard?

There's more to this.
Some people are simply unemployable.
One of my relatives is married to a guy like that. Highly educated and will never work a day in his life.

This has no impact on trades or unskilled workers getting jobs associated with the data center boom.

He should be working with several recruiters. I'd hire the dude with a good paying job if he applied where I work. It might not necessarily be in his field but he could get some work experience in the meantime.

I imagine his issue is geographical more than anything.
I'm sure he could get a job, just not where he wants to live

Ok, but job hunting is like investing
You have to be diversified
And you have to be willing to take steep pay cuts if needed
I’ve had no problem applying for an accepting a customer support or billing roll with a 30-40% income reduction if I lost my job

Tough to even get past the AI gates and into actual interviews.
Not only AI gates, but HR in general. You're basically being gatekept by an AWFL. They are the ultimate arbiters of what makes it to the hiring manager, and if you're in a technical field without inside contacts, you are absolutely fricked. Either through sheer incompetence and ignorance by Karen and her HR friends, or through outright hostility from them because of who and what you are.

He could teach high school but probably feels that is below him.

The US Navy would hire him tomorrow.

That's the other part of this equation. Is he open to relocate, to include to places that aren't on his ideal list of places to live?? Is he open to working for a company that's also not "ideal", even for a couple years?
Unless I missed something in the article, I'd venture to guess one or both of the above is coming in to play that he's not being honest about.
