Eggs, gas, and now electric vehicles. Inflation is hitting electricity rates, making EV home charging a more miserable experience for some drivers at the absolute worst time.

A new J.D. Power study of EV owners who use Level 2 home-charging stations found that overall satisfaction in the home charging experiences has declined 12 points since last year. (More on EV charger types here). A major factor in this decline in satisfaction was the inflationary rise in electricity prices, the study found.

This could pose a real problem for the EV market, as home charging has often been held up as a solution to daily range-anxiety issues. Without a robust public charging infrastructure, daily home charging is currently key to effective EV ownership, according to automotive executives, dealers, and analysts.

"Whether you're an automaker, dealer or utility company participating in the EV ecosystem, improving the EV owner experience with respect to home charging should be a common goal shared by all," Brent Gruber, executive director of the EV practice at J.D. Power, said in the study.

Gruber pointed to several programs designed to ease the cost of EV home charging, including options to schedule charging at the most affordable times of day. But the J.D. Power study found that this is little awareness for these money-saving tricks, which brings down the overall experience.

Geography played a role in overall satisfaction levels with home charging, J.D. Power found. In New England, where electricity prices surge at peak hours, home charging satisfaction saw the largest year-over-year decline.

Only about half of EV owners in the study said they had an understanding of their local utility company programs for home charging. Increasing this awareness is key to improving the EV home charging experience, said Adrian Chung, J.D. Power's director of utilities intelligence.

I finally rented one of my last business trip and they just aren’t practical. They’re fun to drive, but charging stations aren’t that readily available, plus they charge so damn slow.

Also, I think the fees out there broke down to like 10 miles or less per $1 spent.

The hotel didn’t have charging stations and I ended up having to head to LAX at 4a with barely enough charge to get me there. Gas is far superior.

I worry everyone will deplete the supply of magic electricity that pours from between the studs in our houses.

Little awareness or little desire??? I don't want to wait to charge my car, I want to charge it now so I can drive it when I need it.

I don't mind the general concept of EVs, but it makes absolutely no sense to push forward mandating them (like California is) when the infrastructure can't handle them.

Passed by a pub block of Tesla chargers last night and cars were lined up around the block. What a bunch of idiots.

It’s really not that fricking hard to charge your car at home. Set the charging to charge at off peak hours for the biggest savings.

I bet it’s still cheaper at home during peak hours than driving a gas car.

AFAIK, some or most of these cars have software built-in to charge overnight during off-peak times — it just sounds like they're not using it.

Unless you commute hundreds of miles, most people don't even need 240V charging, and can do just fine on a 10-hour 120V top-up.

But one has to wonder, when "everyone" supposedly starts doing this overnight, will there even be such a thing as economy hours on the local grid anymore?

Yep...the areas where electricity is most expensive will be least satisfied with the EV charging experience. For those in the South, here is what it costs to fully charge a Tesla Model 3/Ford F-150 Lightening (least and most expensive to charge in survey):

Alabama - $4.99/$10.90
Florida - $6.04/$13.18
Georgia - $5.96/$13.01
Kentucky - $5.15/$11.24
Louisiana - $4/51/$9.84
Mississippi - $5.48/$11.96
Missouri - $5.78/$12.63
North Carolina - $5.66/$12.35
South Carolina - $5.94/$12.97
Tennessee - $5.71/$12.47
Texas - $5.02/$10.95
Virginia - $5.50/$12.00

When I was in Palo Alto last week literally half the people living there had EVs. It was wild to see.

I’m in the industry and you have to realize it’s still basically in its infancy. As much of a talking point as it has become there is no rush to put everyone in an EV, and those with industry knowledge would the the first to tell you it will introduce a slew of new issues if we rush it. Gas isn’t going anywhere now or for the foreseeable future. Some people, and a very small portion of the population at that, drive EVs and are essentially still beta testing for the larger effort.

If you didn’t see that coming, you’re a moron.

All those leeches sucking on the power grid charging their electric cars .
