You sir are an idiot. Most are not fat. Travel to Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and report back.

I quit after smoking a pack a day because my 45 year old friend I was working with already had emphysema and acute bronchitis.

He rode with me to work everyday and it scared the shite out of me, the guy couldn’t breathe. I was 35 and havnt touched them in 10 years

Almost all of them are English or French and are walking over 10-20K steps a day.

Exercise is a big variable.

Food preservatives and sugars are another big problem with American food.

I generally like the idea of a minimalist government but I see the argument for disallowing certain amounts of sugar and preservatives when the cost of medical care is often turned into a government responsibility (on the back end)

It can probably be explained simply based on demographics.

There is a bit of Baader–Meinhof in your observations. Yes, there are fat people in Europe, but each individual example you see creates selective attention and you start seeing them everywhere because you didn't expect to see them.

Europe is not homogeneous when it comes to weight. If you visit Italy there are very few obese people, but the ones you see stick out and are memorable. The Southern area is far more obese than Northern Italy so it depends on where you visit. Many of the Italian-Americans came from the south and is the reason mafiosos are often portrayed as fat.

Leave Italy and cross the channel to the UK and there are a LOT more obese people not as many as in the US as a whole but more than in many parts of the US. In a way, Europe is like the US, parts like Colorado and Italy have relatively low obesity rates for their region, but places like Louisiana and the UK are much higher.

One thing I have noticed (which may not survive statistical scrutiny) is obesity in the US is less dependent on economic status than it is in Europe. My observational "data" suggest there are far more well-heeled fat folks in the US by percentage.

They walk more
They don't have all the fake shite in the food we do
They have smaller portion sizes
Workers have a shite ton of vacation and less stress than your average American does not to mention in most of the EU its hard to fire someone

All of this matters.

A significant portion of the U.S. population is definitely overworked

Some people even brag about how much they work. I used to work a lot of long hours and refuse to ever do it again. It's not worth it.

Don’t see too many obese 85 year olds on Earth.

Meanwhile, there are numerous 80+ yo sex, drug & rock n roll’ers still walking the Earth. More than I would have imagined.

The sex, drugs & rock n roll > The Fork
(Life span)

In the US, all kinds of chemicals are used to make cigarettes fire safe and heck even at a time asbestos was used as cigarette filters.

This!

And different attitudes such as:
- no drive thru fast food
- no sugar is like oxygen home pantries
- no sky restaurant signs all over highways
- no eat out everyday

Both obesity and smoking are bad for you. Obesity is probably worse.

We have 13% of the US population that seriously drags down our average.
