Annual deaths from lightning: 280
Current deaths from Corona virus: 535

So, as of today, you are twice as likely to die from the corona virus as to be struck by lightning.

Please give us a little more info other than "Pouring in". Things like what hospital, whats the ICU bed count, how many on vents, how many vents do you think are available. I think giving us real information might help

We can’t give all this info out as it’s all changing and it’s kinda private..

What I'm seeing sorta dovetails with that. If there's a hospital in the greater New Orleans area that's over run with anything, I don't know about it.

The level of suspected covid admits however is really high.

Overrun is just a buzz word to make people think hospitals look like a movie with patients throwing up blood in the hallway. That’s only going on in Italy and Spain that I know of.

Locally, in Nola, the VA and UMC are seeing a high rate symptomatic cases. It felt like my test referral rate was near 100% yesterday.

I wish people would stop using their area as the litmus of how this virus is being fought. Some areas are worse than others. Plain and simple.

that or be tested and shown antibodies indicating they had it already.

This, in and of itself would have a calming effect, just by demonstrating that a number of people did not have to be hospitalized and have recovered on their own by treating symptoms.

Because there are shite ton of people that are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms and are still leaving the house to go to work, the grocery, etc. The more people we know that are positive, the easier it is to stop the spread. See South Korea

I don't disagree with testing. I feel it is the only thing that will satisfy people. But the exponential jump in the positive number WILL cause greater panic and more knee jerk reactions.

Testing must be moved to testing sites though. Places where staff are ONLY dressed in PPE and equipped for mass testing. These sites will conserve PPE.

A second wave of infection will almost certainly occur if the social distancing measures are lifted anytime in the next several months, which is a fundamental flaw with the whole strategy.

Every 14 days is a new wave-- but I get ya. This is my fear and one that is not being taken seriously. I understand we all have bills-- but let's be honest, we are in a nose dive as a country, and it's not going to get any better before it gets far worse. Me going to work so I can pay my cable bill and mortgage is not going to help when people are dying all around us and overwhelming hospitals -- as this happens, society will collapse regardless. If for no reason, then just panic. Drive up to Walmart on Coursey. I am sure it's still bare, and this was just from panic. It was not from any cases here in Louisiana, just the idea of what could happen. Now, consider what will happen if 1174 cases turn into 3000 and our cases in BR top 100. Mass panic will ensue, which will lead to collapse because we will have no choice but to stop working for a long while.

That and traffic is so much better too. We have been constantly joking at work how much better our jobs would be with a permanent pandemic.

Yea over-run isn’t a great word. I’ll say most large hospitals in populated areas in LA are really busy. What administrations are worried about are if high admit rates continue in the icus, they don’t know where to put these sick patients. That’s the problem currently

Oh it’s awesome. We have been getting free food, 0 visitors, much more autonomy. And taking care of them in the icu is not challenging at all really.

2. My main point for starting this thread... People will not be happy until everyone who wants a test gets a test. This is ominous to me, but it is our nature. As more are tested, more are going to be positive, and in numbers that will make the general public further shite themselves. Harris Co/Houston will no doubt announce a stay home mandate today. Each report of positive cases or a move by county officials is like a firecracker in a chicken coop. Lots of shitting and flapping. I have fielded phone calls from so many people wanting Corona "screening". We do not screen! We test at this point when deemed needed. My hospital system though is beginning to cave. We are testing some.

I fail to see what good testing will do given the nature of this virus. A person comes in with a couple of symptoms and comes out with a negative result. Meanwhile while he is getting tested someone who has this with no noticeable symptoms walks by the first person's car in the parking lot and sneezes on it. First person comes out holding his negative result in one hand and touches the car door with his other hand. Now he has it and thinks he is still negative. You are going to have countless scenarios of this type everywhere in the country. No one is ever going to know who all has this and exactly when they have it.

Meanwhile the day after this happens the supervolcano underneath Yellowstone National Park erupts and none of this means anything to anyone anymore.

Mass panic will ensue becaiss people like you watch channel whatever the frick and take it for fact. This is the week everyone’s supposed to die all around us... what’s happening? Nothing...... you people mongering group think wishing death tolls will rise should be weeded out and prosecuted. It’s the smallest loudest minority and it’s disgusting.

Is there a shift in hospital terminology? When did ER become ED or does it just depend on facility?

Disagree that it will cause panic. Let's say tomorrow we know that there are actually 5 million cases of COVID-19 across the US. That would mean it is much closer to working itself through the population with greater herd immunity and it is much less fatal than we thought. ...Not saying that is the actual number, but just saying it is more likely to calm than panic most people.
