Unfortunately bike lanes can be even worse if they're next to street parking. Many people don't bother to check their mirrors before opening their door right in front of a bike. They just ... open the door.

Or maybe they start their car and just pull into traffic without looking. That happened to a coworker, he was in a bike lane and a car he was passing just pulled out of the spot without warning. He spent a month in the hospital and eight more in rehab.

The real solution is that everyone on the road - everyone - needs to pay better attention.

It’s unfriendly for outdoor weddings most of the year as well. That’s why they don’t have that many of them.

And I’m not criticizing cyclists or this guy (Buddy). Just suggesting we deal with the reality of the situation as it is, not as we’d like it to be.

"By the time we had left the swamps and reached those rolling hills near Baton Rouge, I was getting afraid that some rural redneck might toss bombs at the bus. They love to attack vehicles, which are a symbol of progress, I guess." Ignatius

Replace vehicles with the word bicycles.

Its why people do not not come here. The level of idiocy in this region is off the charts.

Next, canoes/kayaks will hated for being on the water with all the drunk boaters creating a bottleneck. Next, it will be moms pushing jog strollers, grandmas taking a walk, etc.

Ive travelled the hilly and winding back roads of Colorado while living there and encountered many bicyclists. People, in general, are more accepting of other forms of recreation and remain alert.

66 is somewhat hilly and winding. Not so hilly and winding that an alert driver couldnt have seen two cyclists.

Ill wait for the facts to come out regarding this case but my heart goes out to all the families involved.

Dumbass, my thoughts on the overall idiocy of this region are separate from the facts to be presented by this case.

Trust me, it's not just Louisiana. It's really not just the South, either.

The horrific insurance rates stem from having had corrupt insurance commissioners in the past who kept rubberstamping premium increases while putting kickbacks in their pocket. With Louisiana's demographics, this forced a bunch of folks to just forego getting insurance altogether. Then, you combined the shitty drivers angle with having no insurance, you have wrecks and then you contact the Morris Bart's of the world. Lawsuits galore. More suits feeds the insurance premium dragon. Next thing you know, the whole vicious cycle started.

So here we are now, 20 years later. And the insurance rates still keep getting rubberstamped through - by a panel of most (yep, you guessed it) attorneys. No insurance, more lawsuits, more work for attorneys. Of course they wouldn't back down from insurance rate hikes.

Not saying your point isn't valid, but it's like blaming the problem of a failing air conditioner on the material of construction of the screws.

There are also more school shootings in American than anywhere else. Stop sending your kids?

More hunting deaths here. Stop hunting?

More car wrecks. Stop driving?

More heat strokes. Stop going outside?

There’s also brain eating amoeba in the water. Stop drinking it?

Yes. That's EXACTLY what rational people do when the danger to them and possible repercussions of their action are too great for them to accept. They either do it and accept the risk or accept that they're going to quit doing it, not piss and moan while wearing garishly colored spandex shorts.

rational people don’t get upset or complain when driving and get hit by a bad driver? Okay.

You are literally shifting blame to the victim. “Repercussions of their actions”. Jfc.

Wrong. Look at the insurance rating commission. 95% of them are insurance agents.

Don’t ride bikes in South Louisiana? Yeah, Way ahead of you. When I lived in Colorado one year I rode over 5000 miles in a single year. I took my bike across Kyushu Japan , took a boat to Korea and rode across Korea. I did Ride The Rockies in the 90s. When I go on vacations I ride bikes. I love cycling with family and friends . Old man strength works on bikes. I feel amazing when I cycle . Two weeks ago I cycled , stopped my bike and randomly sat down on a bench and Don Cheadle was ten feet away. Cool stuff happens to me on bikes.

I would not ride a bike ( other than the neighborhood) in South Louisiana under any circumstances. Way, way too many low IQ baws looking to get even with the world for giving them tiny dicks. I mean, that’s obvious enough just driving in traffic, let alone cycling. I will just stick to my walks. Too many people raging on these shitty roads to cycle.

How can a cyclist possibly take responsibility for that? It is a drivers responsibility not to hit anything in the road.

Christ, you frickers are dense. Guarantee none of you assholes would give the same argument if it was a child on training wheels on a residential street.

I agree.

In fact, if I run over a child on his training wheels in a neighborhood, it's the child's fault and he deserved to die.

We wouldn’t have our child riding on the roadway.
