So you have your child taking up the entire sidewalk?
Yep, you're an a-hole.

Nah. The child's brain has not sufficiently developed the reasoning skills necessary to understand the risks that come with his actions and make a rational choice to either accept the risks while performing the action or not perform the action.
That one's on the parents.

Yeah, Way ahead of you. When I lived in Colorado one year I rode over 5000 miles in a single year. I took my bike across Kyushu Japan , took a boat to Korea and rode across Korea. I did Ride The Rockies in the 90s. When I go on vacations I ride bikes. I love cycling with family and friends . Old man strength works on bikes. I feel amazing when I cycle . Two weeks ago I cycled , stopped my bike and randomly sat down on a bench and Don Cheadle was ten feet away. Cool stuff happens to me on bikes.
Goddamn that's awful what happened to that guy. The rangers actually closed 25 miles of the Natchez Trace last weekend for us to ride.
I can't imagine life without my bike. Best thing I've ever gotten into in my adult life.
Like pimp I've ridden all over without problems. Organized rides like when we did the Tail of the dragon and cherohala skyway are the best because bikers and cops keep the traffic away but you miss a lot of the world only being in a car.
Biking is the perfect cross between running..where you might go 5-10 miles top running and driving where a metal box keeps you from enjoying the road.
I used to do 100+ mile rides on Saturdays and Sundays all the time but even a short 40 mile ride is one of God's great gifts.

No, the child needs to take responsibility for creating a bottleneck on the street.
Until children stop riding bicycles, they deserve to get run over by cars, and I have no sympathy for them.

I would not ride a bike ( other than the neighborhood) in South Louisiana under any circumstances. Way, way too many low IQ baws looking to get even with the world for giving them tiny dicks. I mean, that’s obvious enough just driving in traffic, let alone cycling. I will just stick to my walks. Too many people raging on these shitty roads to cycle.
You are loathsome quitter according to another one of your biker brothers from earlier in this thread. Apparently, he equates your concern for your own safety into an acceptance of blame on your part. By not riding on our shitty highways full of incompetent drivers, you are abandoning the cause of the cycling brotherhood (sorry for the sexism), and promoting the bias against cyclsts.

I gave up
And here lies the problem. We have become acclimated to catering to the incompetent.
People are arguing in this thread that we should all get out of the way and let drivers too stupid or irresponsible not to hit cyclists take over the road. Everyone should bow down to their inability navigate their vehicle safely on the road.
This is how stupidity, incompetence, and irresponsibility triumph over those of us that aren’t. It’s a silly framework.

I know people here will think I’m crazy but of all the roads in West Feliciana to cycle, Hwy 66 is actually one of the safest. When you compare it with the smaller parish Roads and Hwy 421,966,965, etc it’s wide open. They hold huge bike races and events on these roads and I’m shocked it happened on Hwy 66 before one of the others.
Then again, with 66 being as open as it is, it’s more likely a driver would be distracted / not paying attention than on a smaller winding road that commands more focus.

Kids should be taught that they have the legal right to ride their bikes in the street and that if they get run over, it's not their fault. They need to learn the importance of exercising their rights.

Ahhhh century rides on the weekend. Boulder County 1993-2000. That was my life. We never had a single problem.
I just came back from metro Vancouver. My kids , Mrs Pimp, we rode bikes everywhere. The entire city is designed for pedestrians and cyclists. The quality of life is miles ahead of ours because you can spend the entire day exercising in the sun. It’s why I moved to Colorado.
Louisiana—- naaaah. Louisiana is an exercise/outdoor shithole except for hunting and fishing. Cardio sports don’t stand a chance. Wear a pair of biking shorts and a helmet and take a 2 hour ride around the lakes and some baw gets really agitated at the site of you. I don’t recommend cycling in Baton Rouge.

It’s almost like all the spandex cuts off blood flow to your brain. (You in particular. Not cyclist in general)

The point is that enabling the irresponsible and incompetent to driver by exusing their actions is a real and signifanct part of the problem. And that’s not just for drivers v. cyclists. I feel the same for driver v. driver.

Somehow ishtty driving has become socially acceptable. Instead of saying “I should have been more careful” has become “he shouldn’t have gotten in my way”.

Actually it doesn’t. It prevents rash and arse burn. But as it’s not a pair of jeans, it agitates baws. Almost as bad as eating with a pair of chopsticks or speaking properly or eating healthy food. That’s “ fig” stuff baw.

It really is illogical we allow bicycles on 55 mph roads. Bikes are only moving at 10-20 mph. Why can't I also walk down these roads? Because people walk too slow.
I'm guessing bike laws started as rational laws intended for urban areas and have been expanded to highways. Are bikers going to be riding on the interstate next?
Bikes should be restricted to roads that are 35 mph or less.

And now, being the emotional wreck that you are, are trying to somehow say running over kids is okay
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how riding a bike on a roadway is dangerous. It also doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that pointing that out isn’t attacking cyclist or calling for them to be banned or whatever.
But it does take an irrational and emotional mess to somehow link pointing out that creating a rolling bottleneck equals to being okay with a kid being run over.
