Question in Thread Title.

I have a feeling that SDBs are being used less & less as finances become more digital.

I haven't had/paid for one in 20 years.

Three between personal, business, and my parents which I also have a key to. You re right they're being used less and less, but they still serve a purpose.

I have a joint one with my dad that has his will and a few other documents and valuables in it.

Yes. My wife and I use it for important documents like birth certificates, wills, passports, etc. Along with some jewelry/valuables that have been passed down.

I don't have a SDB. I bury my gold in the yard.

.... Or maybe I don't.

Have had one most of my adult life. Keep imortant docs etc., some coins and gold. Had one for years at the bank on the corner of Jefferson Ave. and Freret at about eye level. Went to bank after Katrina and bank had taken about 4 feet of water. SDBs are not waterproof. Boxes below mine flooded and all the paper documents were destroyed. Went into bank with a bank officer and locksmith who punched out the lock because the keys did not work.

I find mine useful and they are pretty cheap.

Also, fun fact, it’s “safe deposit box”. I think so many people (including me for most of my life) say “safety” that it just became accepted. It’s also a pretty reasonable name for the box.

No, my bank, USAA, doesn't have branches. I keep valuables in my Dad's safety deposit box, he has several.

Not at my daily bank. I have some items in a SDB at a different institution in case the SHTF.

I don't want everything at one location.

Boggles the mind that banks in LA don't provide a stack of heavy duty Ziplocks for people to put papers in.

Nope. And I accidentally dropped all my guns in the lake in a boating accident.

Haven't in years.. it never failed that the only time I needed a document, cash, or whatever from it was during non-banking hours. instead now I keep a large safe in the house for valuables, documents, etc.

It's becoming harder and harder even to find one these days. Smaller local banks are the easiest to find them at, but I've had TWO banks bought out from under me by bigger banks who didn't offer boxes after the merger.
