We had one until a few years ago when we got a letter from Bank of America that they have the right to access it at anytime they please ... so we closed it down and will never have another.
Everything goes in the gun safe now. It's safer and more secure than a safety deposit box in a bank vault.
You just need to nest your important paperwork, precious metals and jewels inside in the unlikely event that your home burns down and is so hot that it might cause combustion. There are ways to do this that makes it almost foolproof especially if part of your nesting strategy involves implementing a safe room as your first layer of protection.

Not at my bank, but I have one. A family member owns a business and his office is in an old bank building and it still has the safe deposit boxes. I have one there. Only things in it are our wills and a couple of pieces of old, family jewelry.

No, and there is zero reason to.

No, because I'm not 80 years old.

Yes, keep birth certificates etc in it
And it is free so not sure I would if we had to pay for it

I have a feeling that SDBs are being used less & less as finances become more digital. I haven't had/paid for one in 20 years.

What is the going rate for a SDB?

I have multiple boxes just for me and mine.

Yes I have one and it doesn't cost anything. You must not have much money in your bank.

Every one I've had has been around $50/yr for a box about 4-5 inches tall and big enough to hold legal sized papers without folding them. Many banks waive the fee if you have enough assets on deposit/under management with them.

Yes, I have one, had it for 35 years, plan to keep it. Some of my friends are keep stuff in “gun safes” most of which are rated only as “residential storage containers” have inadequate fire ratings for protecting papers and digital media, and unless actually certified as a safe can be opened with a large pry bar. People should really do research before using gun safes for protection of valuables.
