I’m old school but I think people should dress like it’s a formal occasion. Unfortunately the major cruise lines have relaxed standards so it’s not as classy an event as it used to be.

Or at the very least a coat and tie. I’m no dandy but people need to respect the rules of society

We went to formal nights on our first 2 cruises, and never again. In fact, we don't go to the dining rooms at all. Just bring shorts and eat in some of the other options.

You miss out on some desserts, but not that much. Dinner is like a 2 hour affair on a cruise ship because of all the pageantry, and we just want to eat quickly and go do something else.

Like what? Eating is the biggest attraction on most cruises.

Yes. We're doing a New England/Canada cruise in October. Need to get my new tuxedo tailored.

I wear khakis, a sport coat and tie. I’m not willing to go beyond that point.

If you take a longer cruise, there are two formal nights.

Cruises are great vacations if you spend the extra money and don’t cruise on Walmart of the seas.

Not dumb enough to go on one of those. The requirement of three days on the water is what made me discount all possible commercial tours of Alaska. It seems to be much like being penned up in the back of a semi load of hogs as there are so many swine aboard. I like my space.

Google "carnival cruise cabin crawl" and tell me what society respects about that.

Yes, they aren’t as strict as they used to be for formal nights but 90% of people still dress nice
