re: Do the Olympics not have the same luster or are we missing mega star athletes in them?

. One lady pulled a Joan Benoit and took off and every seemed to forget about her ... The favorite who finished second thought she had won when she crossed the line but the winner finished a couple minutes earlier
We we all cheering for the eventual winner to finish it strong after we found out what was happening....no idea who she is or anything but it was a great underdog story and why the Olympics are great
Anna Kiesenhofer, also has a PhD in mathematics.
She is a solid pro cyclist but no way she should have won. While she never should have been able to break away with no one noticing she was able to stay away because of some weird limitations they had in Tokyo regarding team radios. Had the peloton known she was ahead they could have ridden her down with ease. She won by a little over a minute and the general rule is a pro peloton can pull back a minute per km on a single rider or small break group.

When the athletes representing America hate America, I don't watch. In fact, I root for the other team.

I just find it hard to feign caring about the traditional Olympic sports once every 4 years.

We have endless entertainment now and the impact is most apparent in the ‘special event’ sports that come around every year or 4 years.
Auto racing, like the Indy 500 and Daytona 500 were huge deals when I was a kid. So was the triple crown in horse racing. We had 4 or 5 channels and no internet.
But sports we consume every day are still a big deal.

I'm excited for the Olympics but MAN this Peacock setup is pretty shitty so far..
I'm hoping it's a little better organized after opening ceremonies

All of these athletes now compete against each other in their own sports leagues every year around the globe.
Don’t we also already know who is going to win many of the events?
They televised the trials for track and field, for example. Those times are usually pretty accurate to how well they’ll do in the Olympics. Outside of a few (small) dramatic moments, you can already tell who to bet on.
Throw in the activism shite, and it’s just an exhausted event all around.

I remember the hyped up Dan vs Dan campaign in the 90s. But then one of the Dan's didn't even make the Olympic team.

Everything is mitigated to Peacock. NBC jumped the Shark with the Olympics a long time ago.

I’ll probably also be learning about rugby to cheer on Spain

I find it hard to believe you couldn’t figure out what he meant. He meant there’s no buzz. Few commercials. The Olympics are not in the public consciousness. Which in years past it would be on the eve of the opening ceremony.
