Trying too hard. If they want you, they will write you a thank you letter begging you to come aboard.

You didn't make a statement about the company you work for. You gave a statement about "big corporations."

I've seen an article circulating around LinkedIn that suggests not hiring a candidate who doesn't send a thank you letter after a job interview. I find that ridiculous.
While it wouldn't hurt anything to do so, the pretentious job hunting circle jerk has gotten out of control.
A prospective employee is expected to research the company, compose a targeted resume, compose a targeted cover letter, and some are suggesting a thank you note after the initial interview.
Keep in mind this prospective employee is probably applying to numerous jobs at the same time.

I like it when they send a follow up letter. Means they met us, saw the work place, and are serious about wanting to be on board. I dont ding anyone for not doing so though.

Not how big corporations work. That is what HR is for, or so I am told
I work for one of the biggest private companies in the state and got responses to my thank you email directly from the hiring manager (and their subordinates I also interviewed with) both for the first job I got with this company and a job I interviewed for in another department.
You might be retarded if you don't know how to craft a 1 or 2 sentence response to a thank you email.

I once read an article where a woman said that if she didn't receive a thank you email, that person is not getting the job. That dumb bitch should not be in charge of hiring anyone.
She was also eviscerated for that article.

The job search is a job itself.

I think she might have been responding to the second part of that post, and her response is accurate in my experience

Same for me. We do the interviews, but HR presents the official offer.
I don't typically write thank you letters, for the last few interviews I've been on I haven't sought out the companies and applied to their jobs, I've been contacted by recruiters and asked to interview for positions. I'm doing them as much of a favor as they are doing me

getting a thank you letter definitely sets them apart from the other candidates. but if another candidate was a better fit, the letter wouldn't make a difference

Agreed... time, effort and thought vs a 10 second duration email...

I wrote a thank you note in 1992 to then Louisiana state climatologist jay grymes.

People who say don't do it apparently have never been on the interviewer side of the table.
