You are a not a professional if you don’t write at least an email to the interviewer thanking them for their time. In high end sales it is expected and a killer if you don’t.

one handwritten note I received from a chick seemed over-the-top and desperate, though.
that’s how I feel

If I’m competent with a few others for a job and a handwritten note is the tie breaker, oh well

Thank you email.

I've done that. It has worked.

I have gotten thank you emails from prospective candidates, I just ignore, because what am I going to say? "You were great, someone else got the job" or "if your background check goes ok you might get an offer!" "Nice meeting you, not what we are looking for.."

Um, how about "Thanks for the email. It was great meeting you. We'll be in touch."

And whether they get the job or not, you should "be in touch." If you don't personally tell interviewed candidates that they didn't get the job, then you're a coward.

Not how big corporations work. That is what HR is for, or so I am told

Exactly! If the recipient has time to read letters from rejects they have time for more productive duties that benefit the employer. Reading "thank you" notes doesn't enhance the bottom line.

that’s the recruiter’s job, not management’s

If you're "too important" to respond to (or even just read) a thank-you email, that's just laziness.

If your organization has a policy against it, then whatever. I made that comment on the assumption that one was allowed to.

seems like a lot of employees and employers alike don’t realize employment is supposed to be mutually advantageous.

This is America where employers have 90% of the power if not more.

For white collar jobs in 2019? I’m not sure I agree.

I don’t have a family though so they can’t bully me nearly as much... so I understand I’m in the minority.

Old people want them because they are not good at their job and can't rank candidates according to skills and knowledge. It is not a thing among millennials.

I once read an article where a woman said that if she didn't receive a thank you email, that person is not getting the job. That dumb bitch should not be in charge of hiring anyone.

Yeah, because that thirty seconds is much better spent on TD.

I’ve handwritten thank you notes, sympathy notes, congratulatory notes, encouragement notes and just general how are you doing notes all my life. It was drilled into me by my mother and this many years later I actually enjoy it on my own personal stationary.

I'm in this camp as well.

I wouldn't deny someone a job solely for writing a TY note, but to it certainly adds a touch of je ne sais quoi to that candidate's application.

If a candidate prints their resume on nice paper, and especially if they put it in a nice resume envelope, and then if they send an email or letter thanking me for the opportunity I am more likely to hire them because it shows they value the position and have an attention to details.

When people do more than just thanks for the opportunity, and follow up in a pushy way, that is worse than sending nothing.
