Do people actually write thank you letters after a job interview?

Soft move IMO

I've had good success doing so.

The interviewer writes me a thank you letter usually.

Only people who like jobs.
Of course, if we're talking about an interview at the Dollar General, probably overkill.

Show your appreciation by closing Tigerdroppings and getting to work

I send them erotic fiction letters. It actually got me hired one time. It was for freelance erotic fiction writing position, but I think I would have gotten hired no matter what the job was.

I had a coworker leave (in her 50's). She sent HAND WRITTEN thank you's to those who interviewed her for a new job. I told her it made her look weird. She didn't understand.
I have gotten thank you emails from prospective candidates, I just ignore, because what am I going to say? "You were great, someone else got the job" or "if your background check goes ok you might get an offer!" "Nice meeting you, not what we are looking for.."

I sat in on an interview and we ended up hiring the guy. I'll bet to this day he thinks he got the job because he wrote the letter. It was a nice touch but he would have gotten the job without it anyway.

Yeah, but does it hurt?
It shows a real interest in the job, and I would imagine that employers don't HATE seeing that.

I've hired someone because they followed up with a thank you letter. Sometimes there isn't a lot to separate people and the little things can help you stick out.

Yes. It gives the employer the impression that you are serious about the position and gives you the opportunity to reiterate your strengths.
Dialogue after the interview is extremely important.

I’m not writing a letter to Morgan Stanley and I will die on this hill.

Time to reevaluate everything

We hired someone because they did. She was one of a few candidates we were considering, and her follow up thank you letter put her in the position.
