I did something very similar. Make sure, though, that you include a rule that once that single conversation about rings is over, you cannot revisit it. Otherwise she will be pulling out ring shopping info every time you get together.

This is the answer. The info you need from her is the cut and setting style (pave/solitaire/halo etc.) A few pictures would do. Check her Pinterest account. She probably has a few saved.

Pricescope - their forums are like the OT of diamond buyers. Super helpful. They often take the challenge of finding the best diamond for you as fun.
You should also read up on the cut of diamond. What depth, table, and color are ideal for the style and cut? I found this LumeraDiamonds website to be very educational. Here's the link to the round diamond section:

Pricescope, JamesAllen, BlueNile to name a few.
Use the advanced search features to really narrow it down. Why pay good money for a diamond where half the carats are hidden in the setting (too much depth)?
I like sites like JamesAllen and others over bluenile because you see the real diamond you will be buying.
Finally picking a diamond:
Most sites will take several additional ASET pictures and ideal scope of the diamonds if you ask them. ASET images show the reflectively of the diamond.
OR.... you could just go to IDoNowIDont.com LINK and get a much better ring/diamond for the price (almost half off)... but it's a divorce diamond. Not sure if that bothers you.

I bought the best diamond I could afford and put it on a very basic white gold ring. Ring and setting probably cost a couple hundred bucks.
The Rock is what sticks out, and is showcased. People still compliment her on it
Tldr: invest in the diamond, if for some reason she doesn't like the ring she can later put it in a setting more to her choosing but has a great jewel to showcase.

This is all good info. Also, look into Lab Grown diamonds, they have the same genetic makeup as a natural diamond, but tend to be cheaper. I was close to getting a lab grown, but in the end I found a natural diamond I liked for the same price but was a bit smaller (.55 Ct vs .75)

I agree on not wasting extra money on the setting. 14K white gold vs. platinum is an easy choice to make. That money can really help the diamond size and cut. You'll probably upgrade the setting for an anniversary anyway.

Went on Blue Nile and picked a loose diamond to the specs that worked in my budget. The diamond came GIA certified.
Brought the diamond to a local jeweler and picked a setting.
Getting them separate will give you the most bang for your buck.
The final ring appraised for 3 times what I paid.

She told me what she liked. I had the jeweler pick out a few bands for me. I let her see them, and she picked the one that I would have picked. We were already talking about getting married in our late 20's. I didn't let her see it with the diamond in it, and she was still surprised at the proposal b/c she did not see it happening at that time.

To see what the ring would sell for should things not work out... I'd check out this webpage:
IDoNowIDont (It's prob less than half what you paid) Again, if I had it over, I'd probably would have just bought a ring from that site. Who cares if someone else got divorced? It's not the diamonds fault. Hell, people reset diamonds in new settings all the time.

When we were talking about getting married, my wife showed me these blue stones she had picked from a family trip she had gone on as a kid that she really wanted to have in her engagement ring. It was sentimental and cost saving. So having a stone in mind made the ring selection pretty easy. She was, and still is, very happy with it.

Incorrect. It is a gift from the guy. It is HIS way of showing his love for the girl, not her way of showing love for herself.
My wife had zero input and it was not even close to what she thought she wanted but she loves it because I designed it myself. I got a custom ring, set and bought my own diamond through a wholesaler.
If some lady gets pissed at a GIFT she aint wife material to begin with.

I don't get how it hurts to get SOME input on her desired shape and style. I mean, she does have to wear it.. all the time. What if, while she appreciates your effort, she doesn't care for the look of your finished product?

The problem is that engagement are less of a gift and more a requirement that every girl getting married needs and is judged by her friends accordingly
