I don't get how it hurts to get SOME input on her desired shape and style. I mean, she does have to wear it.. all the time. What if, while she appreciates your effort, she doesn't care for the look of your finished product?

Because it isn't a surprise if she gets any input. She doesn't have to wear it if she doesn't want to.

And if she doesn't care for the finished product, she can take a long walk off of a short pier. It is a gift.

The problem is that engagement are less of a gift and more a requirement that every girl getting married needs and is judged by her friends accordingly

That is the point. The ring is a token of affection from the guy. It has nothing to do with her friends or anyone else for that matter. If the woman cares about that stuff, she ain't wifey material.

And no, I'm not saying that means a guy should be able to give her an oil covered washer and call it good. He has to put thought into it.

Then, my plan was to buy the exact opposite

If she loves you, then she would take a ring from a pawn shop

I knew what shaped diamond she wanted and I went from there on my own. I wanted for it to be a total surprise, and it to reflect my taste and hers. The ONE thing you have to do is make the proposal everything she ever wanted it to be...but you don't get to ask.

Mine picked hers and her hint was a card from the jeweler with exact ring on back. Pretty indirectly direct lol (The suprise part comes when they don't know you actually bought it and when you pop the question). Word of advice don't think that bigger is better she picked a ring that fit her hand size and personality (get tons of compliments from some pretty well off people and ring wasn't expensive). It's what she'll have to represent her marriage in public so take your opinion out of it and do what she ask/hint

Wait for all of her friends to get engaged. She will undoubtedly comment on EVERY SINGLE ONE. Then you'll have a good idea on what she wants - and you can put off your engagement as long as possible because "we can't get engaged right after ________."

Worked out well for me, she loves her ring.
