We discussed it ahead of time.
Diamond with an amethyst (my birth stone) one one side and a citrine (her birth stone) on the other. #LSU

Nope. She had zero input.

I'm kinda sad the pic won't load due to Photobucket. I'd love to see how trashy that looks.

I knew her preferred shape of diamond, and that she wanted a solitaire. I picked the size of the diamond. It was pretty easy.

If she's not dropping you hints then she doesn't want to marry you...

I knew the designer she liked, we went and looked at some in the Jewelry stores and she tried some on. Later on I went back and took pics of all the rings she liked. A family friend is a Jewelry designer and I sent him everything. It came out way better than I thought. Ring would've been 20k in the store, I paid 9.5k.

This is the way to go. It's been 18 years and wife still tells the story that I picked it out without any input from her whenever she gets a comment on her ring. When I purchased the ring, I did make sure the jeweler would give a full refund if she wanted to change the ring within 30 days . . . or if I had changed my mind about asking

She's dropping hints just not about the ring type.

I got my wife's phone and looked at her Pintrest. She had an entire board for engagement rings she liked.
When I picked the "perfect ring", she thought I was a genius because I got exactly what she wanted. She had no idea.

I told him what style i liked and what kind of band i liked. He researched and picked out the diamond. Did a good job too. I get lots of compliments on my ring.

She hinted on what kind of ring she wanted. I got her something completely different and she loved it.

At a minimum, ask her which shape of stone she prefers.

After listening to several wives talk about how they secretly hated their rings, I says frick that. We picked it out together. Bunch of my buddies think they like the ring they picked out on their own.

I designed it and loves it. Kind of got a little input of what she liked, but I still designed it in the end and she loves it more then anything she picked out. At least that is what she has told me.

It helps a lot if you're serious enough about marriage that you can casually look at rings long before you're really going to get engaged. You may not be able to do what I did, but here's how it worked:
It just so happens my tailor is next to my jeweler, so I had her go w/ me one morning to pick up a jacket. Did the whole, "I want to look at this Rolex" thing (we'd been in once before together). I'd met with this guy probably 4-5 times in the month preceding, so my jeweler already had the ring I'd picked ready to go and knew I was coming that morning. He gave us the bullshite sell (how long together, etc.), convinced her to look at rings over my objection, and showed her the one I'd picked out among 4-5 others. She picked the design I picked, and that was that.
Jeweler already had the family diamond we were using the entire time. GF was shocked, she didn't even know I'd gotten the diamond yet.

Did she get engaged or win the Peach Bowl?
Posted on 9/14/17 at 9:19 am to BeauCephus307
It was a little of both. I let her pick out the gum ball machine and put the quarters in but it was kind of a crapshoot which one of those little colored eggs with the rings inside was gonna come out.....
