We went to pick it out together (in other words, she picked it out and I paid for it). We agreed what we wanted to spend, then when we talked to the first salesperson, the future wife promptly added $500 to the price limit 
.
That is probably the only time she has ever done that, celebrated our 25th anniversary this year.
Money well spent IMO.

Yep, I just set a price range and let her pick out her own ring. 3 months wages. That's the rule.

nope - I knew she loved Emeralds, and was not a fan of Diamonds at all, so I found a sizable emerald ring in a nice setting and went with that.
Kay Jewelers sized it wrong, then had to send it off to get it sized right - then broke 1/3 of the emerald off, so we had to send it back again - she went a month after the proposal without being able to wear her engagement ring.

She picked out the design which made things much easier for me. I just had to decide on the diamond.
