We have all heard the story that Huey P wanted a new stadium but the Legislature demanded new dorms at LSU first. So he built the dorms "in a circle" and just happened to put a football field in the middle.

True? False? Kind of true?

What's the OT know?

He lead the building the dorms inside of the stadium to use state funding to expand the stadium. The dorms were not part of the original build but were included for an expansion.

like most state funding to LSU, it was earmarked. in this case it was earmarked for dorms (Residential Life) so to get around not having funding to the stadium, he pushed to have the dorms built in the stadium. thus the earmarked money went wehre the legislature apportioned it.

Speaking of those dorms, are there any old timers on here that lived in those? Always curious of what that was like.

Those dorms were used for a lot longer than I would have imagined. My grandfather lived in them, all the way to a class mate of mine in grad school.

I didn't live in them but had friends that did, they were the ghetto of dorms, old, run down, no AC, but known for some absolute wild arse debauchery

My dad lived in them in the early 70s. His dorm was above where the student gate is now.

They were exactly what you would think it was like living in a dorm in the 70s. Basic. I don’t think they had AC.

There was a pretty good thread on tRant this fall about folks’ experiences living in the stadium dorms. Lots of good stories.

My dad did his freshman year at LSU in 1954. Said it was hot as shite as he didn't have an AC unit.

Taken his freshman year, with his head shaved and wearing a beanie as was customary apprently...

yep, and up until 1970 I think, all freshmen men had to be in ROTC for at least the first year, not sure when that started, but LSU used to be sort of the "Old War Skule"

I think he got it done with federal housing grants. So yeah the folklore is at least partially true.

He had them build the dorms with a grandstand roof so a stadium could be built for east and west sidelines. IDK how the north end zone ones got built.

I did my time in 85.
Hot. No AC just a ceiling fan.
Big mass restroom/shower combos on each floor. Not for the shy or faint of heart.
Nothing glamorous about it at all other than the fact you got to say you lived in the stadium.

I lived in North Stadium above gate 5 my freshman year (1979) and then in South Stadium my sophomore year. Very spartan.

North Stadium: 2 bunk beds, 4 small desks, and 4 plywood lockers. Hall bathrooms with no individual stalls - all out in the open. No air conditioning.

South Stadium was newer. Two-person room. Luxurious by comparison, but not luxurious in any way. Still no air conditioning. The only air conditioned male dorm I can recall was Kirby Smith.

Good times.

I doubt any of the forms had AC in 54; nor did many classroom buildings.

that's when I graduated, that reminded me of the big bitching going on starting the previous year when they began the stadium expansion and were running pile drivers all day, it must have been miserable to have spent time in that dorm during that

I did.

There was asbestos falling off the pipes. No air conditioning. Steam heating in the winter. Paint peeling from the walls. Loud as hell on game weekends. Open showers like a football locker room.

Zero supervision. You could have sacrificed animals in your room if you wanted. Nobody gave a shite.

Rooms were pretty big, though.
