re: Dianne Odell spent 60 years encased in an iron lung only to die due to a power outage

polio patients remaining utilize the internet much more than their PCP for polio related trauma. Because it is such a rare malady now, there are few knowledgeable physicians to treat. 3 years ago, a new pain management clinic doc told my wife that he would find a specialist that could cure her legs and make her walk again after 70 years of leg paralysis. We quickly scootered away from him.

You don't see many iron lungs these days because positive pressure ventilators are so advanced and small these days, it allows people to live a life outside any house or facility.
Why wouldn’t someone using the iron lung switch to the positive pressure vent?
Just curious, and you seem to know a good bit about it

Crazy. Hospitals do generator tests all the time for this reason.
I would still have had a battery inverter around somewhere to buy some time, but honestly I guess if you wanna be dead enough, then you’re gonna die

There was an old rehab hospital here in rural TX that has since relocated, but the older employees there often told stories about pumping the iron lungs by hand when the power went out.

Presumably her elderly parents weren't able to keep the hand pump going

they can die from a cold because they have no immune system, thats why they must live in the canister and breath purified air. they cant go anywhere but they can live a relatively normal live withing the limitations of it.
think of it as living in a bubble, you can have a decent sedentary live like most lazy people have that never go anywhere or do anything.
and considering the only other option is suicide, who wants to die when you can live with restrictions

These days you would think... I suppose if the pt has some autoimmune issues. Only thing is with PPV you need an airway, tracheostomy, to ventilate. That can be another issue for some some pts.
