I would love it if she made Royal, Chartres, Bourbon and Dauphin walking only from Conti to Dumaine.

assuming they make exceptions for delivery vehicles, i don't disagree with the idea.

What about the hotels in the quarter? Have Uber drop you off on Canal and walk with your luggage to your hotel?!

Yes. Or Uber exceptions, hotel passes, etc.

Here's the issue. They will have to come up with an efficient system of allowing delivery, uber, and tenant vehicles into the quarter or provide convenient parking for them just outside of the quarter.

Counting on New Orleans politicians to do something like that correctly at a reasonable price without corruption is a pipe dream.

Whatever happens, the city deserves it for voting her in.

Kind of what I was thinking. Leave Peters/Decatur flowing as it is.

I would be in favor of making the quarter a pedestrian zone provided they have ample parking nearby with at least shuttle service to the heart of the quarter.

This is very far from a revolutionary concept. It is done well elsewhere in cities that have far more tourists.

Where?

If they leave Decatur open You will never be more than 3 blocks from the edge of the FQ.

5 blocks if they don't leave it open.

It ain't that big of an area.

Dragging luggage for 5 or 6 blocks in the middle of the day in August would be awesome

Restaurants, for one, could use the parking and street spaces not being used by cars to provide outdoor seating for patrons while their indoor seating is limited.

What parking spaces? The loading zones?

He continues to mention the European model, however, that model many cities removable barriers that New Orleans would have to buy or build. They did not also go from mainly commuter cities to walking/public transit.

New Orleans doesn't clean the city now, if you turn it into a walking area you would have to maintain a level of cleanliness that New Orleans is incapable of.

It's a great concept but I would never trust the leaders of New Orleans to implement it.

Lots of lost revenue for the City & hotels, as the meter nazis would be out of the business of generating thousands of dollars in parking fines; as well there would be the loss of coins actually deposited in the meters. With the hotels, their parking lots generate a lot of revenue, with little overhead, for the hotel, But, too, I have always heard that the Mafia owns all the flat level parking lots all over The Quarter, with no overhead except for fresh buckets of yellow paint every 5-6 yrs.

Already have a bunch they deploy during mardi gras or that just stay up permanently.

It's a small part of the city. Something like 6x10 blocks. It isn't like this area is a large commuting hub.

Also has mass transit on three sides as well as 'hubs' at two corners.

I'm sure they will frick it up for a long time.

5 blocks from Rampart, though. Even if it weren’t currently closed due to the Hard Rock fiasco, I’m not sure I want to tote my luggage from Rampart.. much less leave a car parked over there.

There are a myriad of problems here:
- Residents
- Commercial activity (deliveries & service vehicles
- Cabs/Uber
- Hotels

The first two (residents and commercial activity) could probably be managed fairly easily with a permit system. Cabs and Uber could probably be regulated to some extent by either limiting their access points or implementing some type of fee system for stops in the quarter.

Hotels are the problem. You would either have to a) eliminate hotel parking or b) find a way to regulate it. Eliminating it would be pretty fricked since it would give the places on Canal a huge competitive advantage over the hotels inside the quarter. Regulating it would mean trusting NOLA to implement an efficient system that doesn’t piss everybody off.

Which brings me to my final question - what’s the point? Latoya’s whole shtick was that restaurants and bars can use the extra space on the street for capacity and whatnot. But that ain’t happening unless you ban vehicles outright, including delivery drivers. Parking in the area already sucks, and that’s WITH no less than 12 parking lots/garages in the quarter, NOT including the hotels.

I get the desire to make it “nicer”, but it has to make practical sense as well. I do agree with others who have said that the constant traffic crossing Bourbon needs to be addressed. Seems like this is where the city should start - if they can’t figure that part out, they’ll never figure out the rest of it.
