Are the vast majority of their hotels super compressed into the no driving allowed area?

Nothing wrong with putting it out there to see what's what. Someone may actually have a great idea that would work. The more people thinking about it the better. I certainly wouldn't want the city hall people to decide how to do it. Put it out there for the doers and thinkers. No one in government is Ghana think of how to do it correctly.

This already happens probably 10 weekends a year from 10 pm to 4 am... 2 Mardi Gras weekends, Essence, Bayou Classic, French Quarter Fest, 2 Jazzfest weekends, New Years Eve, maybe even decadence now).

What about the other 42 weekends? That’s a lot of overtime for a city and police Dept that’s cash strapped.

Actually a good question, will have to be answered. Just saying that is one model of how to do this. This might not be the permanent model, as someone said hundreds of "places" do this in the US and around the world, New Orleans doesn't have to re-invent the wheel here.

Charge $150 for a yearly access permit plus proof of residency. Businesses are allowed a certain number of passes.

Access points similar to downtown London with some manned access points.

Safer, revenue producing, everyone wins.

This is a difference scale and dynamic, but everyone blew up in NYC when they started closing large portions of Times Square to ALL vehicle traffic.

Today, 11 years later, most consider it a huge success...

Seems like NOLA could try to implement some version of LSU's "Easy Streets" program where the campus is blocked off to most traffic during designated hours when pedestrian traffic is high. Allow residents, delivery drivers, business owners and whomever else needs one to apply for a permit to access the roads all time. Everyone else is out of luck.

Then again, that would take competent leadership.

No.

And the Quarter streets are only only closed off maybe 10-14 days the entire year. If that.

How do they plan to set up check points into the Quarter 365 days a year?

Dumb idea

I believe they do the same late evening, Fri and Sat, FQ traffic restrictions they use for Mardi Gras, Essence, etc.

I've heard portable barricades are pretty easy to use? And it won't be every day of the year, likely concentrated from Friday evening - Sunday afternoon and a few other holidays.

thats neat. its still done mostly in the morning (like i said), deliveries are done before most businesses open

So very wrong. Delivery drivers run all day and they only have so many trucks and drivers. They mostly route from 6 or 7 to after 3, but truck issues/weather/etc can always cause delays.

they also close down bourbon at 5pm,

They're done delivering by then anyways.

Yes.

This is very far from a revolutionary concept. It is done well elsewhere in cities that have far more tourists.

great idea. Tell the group of people that are coming to spend money in your city they aren’t welcome to drive through the most touristy area of town.

Many of the largest tourist cities on earth do this for large areas and it’s been completely positive for them.

Tell Florence that it’s a dumb idea and they will laugh.
