Being in your car is the safest thing about the French quarter

Don't you mean Canal St?
Poydras makes no sense at all.

Are you including the bus routes or something? The street cars only cover the Canal and riverfront sides of the quarter.

Usually the FQ is just a traffic jam anyway, it takes that away and makes a nicer, and safer, environment for pedestrians.
I assume that is the point. Make the FQ for tourists and tourism.
I usually drive through the FQ 2-3 times a week just to see what is happening. Relaxing drive home sort of thing.
Hotel parking is easy to solve. With your reservation you get a parking pass. Scan via your phone like a plane ticket.
Street dining could offer some cool options, but how the city handles that determines how successful it could be.

Been a while since you have been to the FQ? Rampart line has been in for a few years.
Well, until Hard Rock did it's thing.

Apparently it has.
Or more accurately, a while since I’ve been around Rampart.

Much improved area. Not sure what will happen now with AirBnB gone and Treme in limbo.
Hard Rock was going to be a sort of crown jewel of that stretch. Who knows, that stretch might follow the fate of the collapsed building.

Maybe they should try gondolas between the east and west banks.
I’d also like a pedestrian walkway on the High Rise by the East.
If I can’t drive to my hotel, Ima have to drag my BBQ grill from some offsite parking to my hotel room??? Nahhhh.

I don’t think the vast majority of traffic is visitors driving around the quarter. Every time I’m in Nola it’s to the hotel and then I’m walking or taking an Uber.
This idea is manageable in other cities in Europe but I’m not sure it would work here even with exceptions.

Have you navigated a car through a sea of people? My momma told me don’t play In the street.

I don't go through at 'sea of people' times.

Why would I pay extra for a hotel pass? I can stay across the street instead. So now we are hurting the hotels in the quarter.
I’m curious if other cities doing this have as many hotels in these areas.

It's already cheaper to stay across the street than it is to stay in the FQ. Nothing has changed here. Parking at a FQ hotel is already $20 more/night

Which is fine but parking cost every hotel so now we either make all hotels pay even ones across the city or you give people more reason to just stay on canal.
Which really the canal hotels are better anyways from a pure room perspective.
Do these other none car areas have as many hotels in the non car area as New Orleans? What about bars and restaurants? I imagine it’s more shops and historic sites. I don’t know for sure though.
Also Nola has the added element of crime to deal with.
I could see it working but not with current leadership.

I have no idea what you are asking. NOLA isn't unique in their situation though.
Posted on 5/27/20 at 8:53 pm to fightin tigers
Do the areas currently that are non car on other cities have the hotel and bar density that Nola does? If they do then maybe Nola has a chance to build a legit plan.
Posted on 5/27/20 at 8:54 pm to Big4SALTbro
Yes. The density of those type businesses are what makes pedestrian only attractive.
