A 350 room lodge at Topsail would destroy that park/area of beach. The state parks in panhandles area are always booked to capacity almost year round. A couple of these parks on the list are habitat for scrub jays or the gopher tortoise which are threatened species. Lilly Anderson - Messec or
@lilliumjbyrd on Instagram is a botanist in panhandle that has a lot of details about the proposals.

Look at Mississippi, there is a water park at Buccaneer State Park.
I think it is a draw for more visitors and the park rangers are mad because they will have more visitors to worry about and will have to work more instead of sitting on their arse in their air conditioned hut or chasing after bears who steal picnic baskets.

Yeah, we should really strive to be more like Mississippi.

I don't think any of the Floridian in this thread, hating on this idea, are a park ranger.

I live about 10 miles from a Jonathan Dickinson. I’m very anti JD development. I take my kids kayaking, hiking, and camping there. We’re going to start mountain biking there soon. It’s one of the last areas we have down here of natural land that hasn’t been overrun with development and a beautiful slice of old Florida.
I’m no environmental wacko but 3 golf courses and all the shite needed to keep them looking good in a bunch of sandy scrub brush is gonna be hell on the natural flora and fauna. There are so many golf courses in a 15 mile radius from the park, there’s one park

There is a waiting list most of the year for campgrounds. You should probably sit this one out baw.

He's not. The dissent seems pretty non partisan to me. I'm not a Desantis hater at all.
I guarantee you my department is probably 99 percent red with multiple golf fanatics. Everyone hates the idea and lives within 5-10 miles of the park.

Closet course to me is $500 a round in season. So not enough nice affordable ones

There are several state parks in Georgia with golf courses and some of them are pretty highly rated. This doesn't sound so bad to me
It’s more what you’re wiping out to get the golf courses. In an area with frickloads of golf courses already and relatively little park space.

Don't you just love the annual snowbird migration? I know the state parks with campgrounds in central Florida are booked solid from October to March, mostly non-residents.

To attempt to get this back on track (might be too late), if a state park has 10,000 acres, and 300 of those acres get improved to include a lodge and some pickleball and/or golf course, you think that's a bad idea? 3% of the land gets developed, to bring in more people and revenue to the state park system, are you going on record saying that is "retarded"? Moar Kilometers words, not mine.
Not all of that 10000 acres is usable if you’re familiar with the park though. The 300 acres would cut out or impact much of the spaces actually used by most park goers at JD. A lot of the hiking trails near the front, including the most popular one with the tower.
Not all state parks are created equal either. JD in particular generates quite a bit of revenue due to the amenities it CURRENTLY offers largely because it is a more natural area in an area full of golf courses and pickleball
That’s not even counting the natural impact maintaining 3 golf courses has on a natural preserve surrounded by water.
I think all of this at least for JD is going to get shot down pretty quickly though. Much of that stretch on US1 has remained undeveloped because the Jupiter island money wants it to remain undeveloped and Jupiter island has more frick you money than almost any place in America.

Currently usable. They can absolutely use what you consider to be "unusable land" for this.

You have no idea what you are talking about. He carried Walton County 80-20 and people here are pissed. This is a kick back to people who funded his campaign.
They are going to cut down portions of our state parks to build amenities that we already have.

I think last year new rule was passed that Florida residents can reserve sites at state parks a month earlier than non-res. So if Floridians can plan ahead 10 months (??), they can be sure to at least only compete with only other residents.

Just run of the mill "swamp" politics. Paying back big financial supporters by redistributing tax money to their private companies.

Golf course are often beautiful places that can enhance the natural beauty of the State Park.

The proposal has been withdrawn but the people here are so pissed it was proposed in the first place that now there is support to permanently prevent any future proposals for development at JD.

Something like this would totally frick up a place like Big Lagoon State Park. Completely, in every way frick it up.

In my letter to state officials, I told them that it was a bad look for the Republican Party to do this, esp with little notice.
Typical GOP stupidity coming through...

Walton County, FL is Matt Gaetz district where he just won his primary by 50 points, went 80%+ for DeSantis and is one of the most conservative counties in the state and likely the nation.
This has nothing to do with red vs blue.
I helped campaign for DeSantis and have been to multiple fundraisers for him.
This is still a terrible idea with virtually no local support and is very likely the result of a corrupt deal involving the son of Jack Nicklaus.
DeSantis Plan Linked to Nicklaus
DeSantis deserves every bit of blow back he gets from this.
