What does the OT think about this? A lot of Floridians are pissed about it. I am personally opposed to the development of protected wilderness areas, and I hope that this is stopped, or at least amended and revised to heavily strip down the plans. Are there not enough golf courses and pickleball courts in Florida? And building more hotels and lodging is only going to bring more people to these parks, which will inevitably lead to people trashing these places, and doing other destructive shite, because that's what the general public does. I go to these places to get away from all that shite.

On Monday, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection announced its 2024-25 Great Outdoors Initiative, which will "expand public access, increase outdoor activities and provide new lodging options across Florida's state parks."

The initiative will also expand outdoor activities at some parks, like pickleball, disc golf, golf and paddling.

When I play golf I play at my local state park. It's a nice course and it's cheap as he'll. I couldn't afford to play private courses weekly.

I guess I'd have to see how it's being done. Public access to athletic amenities has always been a thing, people only freak out because it's Desantis.

"It's not about golf," Jessica Namath told WPTV reporter Meghan McRoberts. "To me, it's about destroying an ancient sand dune and destroying the scrub jay habitat."

When Namath learned about the plan, she formed a Facebook group that in just four days gained more than 15,000 members against the project.

"I know my community, and I know they were very much against this or would be," Namath said. "The fact it's been kept under wraps and we haven't had the opportunity to speak out about it is very frustrating."

Of course there’s a dumb bitch speaking for her entire community.

It should be pretty obvious that some "state parks" are perfectly okay with additional amenities, and some absolutely should not be touched. Just depends on the makeup of the park.

Majority of Americans are obese. I live in South Florida and welcome more parks.

Wish pickleball players would quit using the basketball court

Keeping people out of the parks is not really a winning plan.

Maybe. I am ok with DeSantis, and while I am certainly not freaking out, I don't like it.

There are several state parks in Georgia with golf courses and some of them are pretty highly rated. This doesn't sound so bad to me

Didn't Billy Nungesser want to build a fricking casino at Fontainebleau State Park?

No one is keeping people out of parks. But Disney-fying parks is a different matter. There needs to be a balance of accessibility, because these places need to remain wild.

The panhandle definitely doesn’t need anymore lodging. The development along hwy 98 is insane already. Florida is also home to the most golf courses in the country at ~1,250. Such a dumb idea.

In GA, I have noticed the less developed a state park is, the trashier and shittier it's visitors. More litter, illegal dumping, campsites with spent needles, garbage in the lake, etc. The more improved ones are nice places to visit, properly staffed, and so on.

An average sized 18 hole golf course is 150 acres.

Florida has 175 state parks covering 800,000 acres.

If he wants to build 5 or 6 golf courses, what's the big deal?

Does Florida have a lot of nice state parks? It’s not really a topographical wonderland. The northern part of the panhandle has some pretty country.

This particular park in the link is Dickinson state park.

10,500 acre state park.

God forbid he use up 300 acres for two new golf courses. Which isn't pavement, by the way, it's grass, water, and terrain and trees. Not exactly bad for nature.

The biggest bass I have ever caught all topped out at 7.5 pounds. All three came from man-made lakes on recreational spaces, such as a golf course.
