As a fellow teacher and a husband to a wife who deals with depression, my heart goes out to you man.

Just remember, it’s okay to be discouraged by everything going, it’s not exactly a fun time in the world. Hell, I’ve even felt a little blue lately just from being away from friends more than usual.

Just take solace in the things you do have. Two weeks married is an awesome time. Me and my wife just made a year and we’ve started to cook new recipes together every night and are having a blast.

Try more creative outlets that aren’t just straight up media (writing, music, take an online course).

Khan academy has a lot of free, really interesting courses. I’ve been working on my science certification and have had a blast.

Bought a harmonica online and work on it between 15 mins a day to 3 hours just because it wraps me up sometimes.

Worked on a short story idea I’ve been kicking around for years but finally had a chance to put it to paper. Am I going to publish it? No, but it was still gratifying to get it done.

Are you thinking of suicide and maybe taking your wife out with you? That would be scary.

Also, I miss the time when men didn’t use words like “emotions.”

Tell that to all the people who lost someone to suicide including combat veterans.

The first paragraph of your advice isn’t helpful at all. The second is pretty good.

Saying “let go of the bad stuff” doesn’t work. When I’ve had depression, which is a large portion of my life, it’s just an over all lethargic, shitty feeling that has nothing to do with my overall outlook on life.

I was expecting this post when I first read the op. It shows that you know nothing of depression and a big part of the stigma surrounding it.

There seems to be a big portion of society that think depression = being sad. Although sadness is one common symptom of depression, it’s far from the only one.

If I knew nothing of real depression, I think I’d see the op as an overreaction or overly dramatic. He didn’t mention anything life ending so what’s the big deal, right?

Depression can make the most simple of daily tasks, routine or trouble an impossible endeavor. I recently had a couple days that I literally could not get dressed. I needed meds from Walgreens and got them the following day because I couldn’t put on my pants. I know it sounds like bullshite but many in this thread have felt this way. My mind races typically searching for anything I could dwell on to hate myself mixed with rapidly changing thoughts creating confusion. At 1230 I tried again to put on pants but all I would think about were failing so I broke out in cold sweat and shakes.

Depression also doesn’t just go away. The meds are littered with terrible side effects but the pain of such darkness is so great, I deal with the bad shite. I don’t wish this on anyone.

Depression is real, a good friend of mine killed himself in college because he could not handle the stress of school and felt no one really liked him

I have a family member that is in a similar spot. They take CBG (not CBD). The company he deals with has a formula for anxiety and another for sleep. They suffered from both anxiety and insomnia and now they don’t (at least not nearly to the degree that they did).

Good luck amigo. I hope you find some peace.

About CBG:

Research Info - not a company link

ETA

I can find out the company that they use and link it if you want to research them.

Let me know if that interests you.

Life sucks for us non-elite poors.
I’ve been watching a lot of old college and NFL games on YouTube to keep my spirits up.
You should dabble into that.

Laying in that hospital bed after the stroke I was wishing I had died
as all of this unfolded I felt sorry for myself thought how will I ever learn to walk again, Will it ever be able to drive again Will I ever be independent and the weight of all those feelings just crushed me I couldn't think of anything else so I was constantly in a state of feeling overwhelmed and like I would survive the next 20 years as a pathetic blob just lying in a rehab bed

And then slowly I had different thoughts I saw all the people on the board that were supporting me my family that loves me began to think about the things I like to do when wanting to do them and then embracing the challenge of walking again talking again The idea of throwing a football right now to me seems like the best thing I can do I want to do that so much that I just fight and even though each day my improvement is minimal sometimes so much so I can't even notice it and sometimes the pain is so severe the whole body hurts from it

but still I remember there are those that believe in me The support from them board the love for my family and friends and I determined to keep going for them

Realize that you have those same people your wife your family your friends and they want you to be better they want you to be happy they want you to win You have a lot to live for

I also have chronic pain and it’s crazy how that can get to depression.

I don’t know why, but my anxiety issues have increased a lot since all of the shutdown/closures started in March. I guess spending so much time at home gives me more time to think about the things that make me anxious. The negative impacts for me have been enormous.

I haven't read all the other replies, I just wanted to respond to the OP. I've had severe clinical depression for years now, basically since I left my bubble of HS and tried to make sense of the real world (I'm 37). A lot of people think that being depressed about a certain event is depression, it's not. There's a reason opiate addiction is such a problem, it's because people who for whatever reason are lacking dopamine, endorphins, etc are able to fill that hole because they sprained something and were prescribed an opiate that released those chemicals that were lacking.

For me, certain substances didn't make me feel high, it made me feel like myself, and that's dangerous. The best thing about this whole pandemic thing is I was introduced to online/message board discussion about all of this. Even if you're not an alcoholic or an addict simply doing a zoom meeting and identifying with the stories and reasons they got there is soothing to me and makes you feel not so alone. Find some positivity but also find some like minds that you can empathize with. Nobody can deal with mental health on their own

Medicine and counseling should always go together in my experience. They both help in separate ways but are most helpful when put together.

Congratulations on the marriage.

That was good shite strokie. Your presence in this community is one of the many reasons I find comfort here. So as soon as a plan came together of a way we could support you I (and many others) didn’t hesitate to do our part. It’s great to hear you felt the love the way we intended.

Because I was a little concerned you faked the stroke to scam us and run off to your shanty home n Mexico, living out your days selling flag shirts by day and your a-hole at night.

Sorry to hear this OP. I dealt with a lot of anxiety when I was younger and went to a therapist who helped me a lot get through some tough things. A good therapist can really help, both of you have to connect for sure. My uncle committed suicide around the age of 60, he talked most of his life about doing it and that’s what he finally did. If you ever get to that dark, dark place. Get help, don’t leave your family behind.

Yes, it is. My good friend and sweet uncle, both suffered from horrific cancers, both just passed away within hours of each other. I’m numb, depressed, and terribly sad.
