Amazon is talking 3500+ and they definitely pay more than $12/hour.

2800 or so, plus a truck drivers that likely earn much more than the $15/hour that the warehouse workers will get.

Much bigger economic impact than anyone thought that Mall property could ever be again.

The mall was closed for years. The Dillards was open with a skeleton crew, and is now closed.

I saw the most miserable Instacart shopper this morning at the grocery store, so I'm in a "hate on these 'new economy' jobs" mood today.

Mall of LA isn't what it once was either. It's still fine to go to but the store selection is a lot crappier than it used to be.

Lakeside is doing what MoL won’t. Lakeside doesn’t put up with using the mall as a babysitter. MoL does.

I remember the MoL used to be the it place during Christmas. They would do a big todo when Santa arrived, decorations and stuff. None of that really happens anymore.

I miss the malls of my childhood most around the holidays. There was nothing better than the sights, sounds, and smells. Stopping at KB Toys to do my Santa perusing.

I hate that my kids will likely never know going to the mall with friends.

Dad considered purchasing that property back in the mid-1950's but thought it was pretty much worthless for anything other than hunting small game and getting your feet muddy. When they built Cortana there he got ill about missing that opportunity. He would mention it every time we drove past Cortana.

What’s crazy is how random Katrina was. Esplanade flooded. Lakeside didn’t. Lakeside is booming and has expanded. Esplanade is in the death spiral of nail salons and discount shoe stores. People just never came back after it reopened.

That's part of it, but the bigger reasons are...

1) Kenner's demographics have gone to shite post-Katrina

2) Lakeside pulls from a larger area, not to mention, easy to access from the NS

3) Lakeside had far better management.

That mall in Kenner should be next.

My first time at the Esplanade mall was way back in 1987. I was a teenager back then and thought the mall was a perfect hang out place. Not too mention the stores (including record stores) were awesome.

Fast forward to 2018, the last time I went there and was disappointed to see what a crappy mall it turned into. Such a shame really.

I think the 1980's were the peak time of people going to malls.

With that much of it and enough space onsite they will likely crush and recycle clean concrete onsite and use it as base material.

That's what they did at Costco with the old Coca-Cola plant.

Non-recyclables will get hauled off (glass, drywall, wood, insulation). Steel beams, large copper wiring, and aluminum storefront will get recycled.

I'll bet there is a shite ton of money in large copper wiring and transformers in that mall.

Thankful I decided to get some pics inside and outside of the mall when the Amazon purchase was announced and before Amazon took control/possession of the property.

So long Cortana. Some good childhood memories there that I will always be thinking about well into my old age.

RIP.

First few years of MofL were great. You had Spencers, music store, book store, sports store, World of Science, good pizza place, Chik fil A, Cinnabon, Radio Shack. And I remember the Christmas stuff...they would have school choirs there, etc. and decorated very nice. Now it's a shell of its former self.

Cortana had a lot of good memories, too from the 80's and early 90's.

Don’t cry for Cortana and your teenage nostalgia. Amazon will build VR malls for you soon enough.

I agree with the rest of your post but when that mall was completely open and in it's prime it provided at least 3500 jobs with all of the stores included. Goudchaux's alone had over 500 just in the Cortana store. You add 5 anchor stores, interior stores and restaurants and then add exterior perimeter car care centers that most department stores had that adds up to a lot of bodies.

Hasn't been close to that for 20 years.
