Demolition of Cortana Mall already underway

The demolition of Cortana Mall started Monday, the first step in a process that will turn what was once Baton Rouge’s premier shopping destination into a 2.9 million-square-foot Amazon fulfillment center.
Backhoes ripped through the entrances behind the former Mervyns store, taking out chunks of the shopping center. A fence had been put around most of the mall, preventing onlookers from getting too close.
If you wanted one last close up look at the old mall....you are out of luck.

The fulfillment center is expected to create several thousand jobs. Two shifts will work daily, with employees coming in for 10.5 hours at a time.

The five-level warehouse and distribution center at Florida Boulevard and Airline Highway, will be nearly twice the size as Cortana.

Cortana Mall opened in 1976 and was the place to shop in Baton Rouge for more than two decades, until the Mall of Louisiana wrested away the title after it opened in 1997. Even after it had been eclipsed by the Mall of Louisiana, Cortana remained viable for years.
But about five years ago, the mall's anchor stores began to close as retailers under financial pressure began trimming underperforming locations. Macy's shut down in early 2016, followed by Sears and J.C. Penney a year later. Virginia College closed in late 2018. As those anchors shut down, smaller retailers followed suit. By the time Cortana closed to the public, it was virtually empty.
Cortana Mall was awesome in the early/mid 1990s.

Are they going to have an Arcade in the Amazon Fulfilment Center?

Contractor better have some ED-209’s patrolling at night.

Can we get Amazon to build the loop next?

I remember squirrel hunting in the woods there before Cortana was built.

Fantastic. BR didn’t lose anything, and may have gained a couple of style points.

I'm really digging some of the comments asking why let Amazon build when he could have been a shelter for the homeless?
That could have made more money if configured like Thunderdome with a streaming service.

You mean the new Kenner City Hall? Can pay your taxes and walk next door to jump on trampolines.

Thousands of jobs that maybe these homeless can go get and no longer be homeless rather than creating hardly no jobs and feeding the problem

Esplanade Mall probably isn't long for this world, but it is in far, far better shape than Cortana.
I haven't heard any decent plans for what to do with Esplanade.

Jeez, we used to go out there all the time when we were in college. I also remember going to the batting cages right across the street. This was long before Skip Bertman opened up his batting cages.

Where's that guy who said it would never be built on that time frame?
Look, if it was locals in charge, it would have been at least a year before demo began. This demo started barely after the ink was dry.
We aren't used to it in LA, but in other states, things happen fast.

Loops are only for Prime members.

What killed people from hanging out at the mall? I'll hang up and listen.

Good bye to all the memories. Hello to our Amazon overlord, spreading Chinese goods at faster pace. The new America.
