We are a global company. Our strategy was to have all sites built to the same standard configuration and IT employees based in time zones that have the company 24hr support without anyone working after hours

Another way to get folks back to the office would be to only assign them a desktop computer. Want them at the office? Computers at the office.

I embraced this philosophy a couple of years ago. Met with each employee individually to sell them on the professional development of being around coworkers if they sought to become managers.

I never said I would never promote a teleworker, but it led to more visible teamwork in the office.

Unfortunately/fortunately, some newer employees left for jobs that could promise more telework.

So much hardheaded, old school ignorance. A company demanding onsite is just handcuffing themselves for perceived control over their employees. You're no longer hiring or employing the best you can find...you're employing the best you can find that just so happens to want to work in or move to whatever specific city the company is in.

The ones who are good in their field and want to work remotely will just get poached or hired by a company who allows them to work remotely, and you lose that top talent. But hey like you said....good riddance I guess

Dell supported WFH well before Covid. To implement this policy now after many years of hiring remote workers is just idiotic. If I was still at Dell, I would be flipping a coin to either continue working and keep a paycheck coming in while looking for a new job, or just give my two weeks and enjoy some time off while looking for a new job.

IT is just a different beast in which WFH actually works unless your job has hardware based components that require you to be on site.

WFH isn't for every profession or situation, but a large chunk of IT can be done WFH and was long before COVID. And was successful.

Training is the issue. All of the replies are talking about how they are productive.

But from a manager point of view new employees are not being effectively trained, feel abandoned, and are leaving quickly.

For people who have been working at a company, wfh is great from them. However when companies are looking at longevity, they need trained employees with a feeling of connection and a work culture.

The sad truth is that most work does not need top talent, it just needs a trained monkey that shows up on time and is accountable.

Being retired , it does not apply to me. (But, In a sense, I do work from home now, since I sell on eBay). In my "real"working years I would have LOVED wfh.

A really good wfh job would be the ability to work from ANYWHERE in the world, not just from your house. I met a girl doing medical billing for a company in Oregon, and she moved to Estonia. I don’t think her company even knew (or cared).

You are completely right! All companies should be continuing to make jobs easier and easier. In fact, to really keep employees happy and retain new top talent they should just pay them to do nothing.

Because times and demands never change whatsoever, amiright?

Yep. If you have lots of positions without clear, measurable expectations that you check on regularly, it's your fault people are wasting company time.

What about workers making it easier for the same job to be done remotely by someone in India who is willing to work for 20% of your salary?

A job where you have to be present is job security against it being shipped over seas.

This. Had a Project Manger I fired a few weeks for throwing a fit that if he’s not onsite, he needs to be in the office. This dude let the project fall to shite and it took me taking over the project until I find a suitable replacement. The metrics he was submitting every week were fudged. I own my company and I currently have 2 dozen projects going and I don’t like micromanaging my people. It’s a good bit of projects to keep up with. This guy had been a good PM for me 2+ years but he wasn’t handling his business recently.

Look, I’m as hardcore an outdoorsman as anyone but my profession comes first. Had he been more concerned about this project as he was fishing and getting ready for turkey hunting the past month, he’d still have a pretty great job going into Q2 of 2024.

I hope he lands on his feet but some of this WFH is out of hand. If you’re in IT or something similar, no issue. To be fair, there are some folks who take their job serious and handle there business but in the last 10 months I’m seeing more problems.

This will be an interesting move. All quality organizations have people that are striving to get promoted. If you want to get promoted, then you must get engaged. I see people that work from home in our company that are simply coasting. It looks like Dell is saying you can coast, just have to coast in the same job. Seems like a win/win.
