Maybe I missed it. I get it was Halloween. I get it was a lot of people. But what caused the standstill that led to the crushing? Just too many people in a small area? People trying to get into a certain place causing traffic jam?

I read that someone spotted a K-pop star in a nearby cafe and a surge towards that place caused the rush

Thats abolutely horrible. Itaewon was the place to party it up when in Seoul (haven't been there since 1988) but Halloween just wasn't a thing back then, however the bigger cities were becoming quite westernized back then, can't imagine what 30 years done.

Unlucky, but probably not that bad of a way to die. You get squeezed and feel dizzy, and that's all you remember.

Not just a small area. We're talking some alleyways being just more than shoulder width apart. Streets are narrow and on pretty steep grades. Even worse during the winter. I saw a guy try to swing at another guy, slipped on some ice and tumbled a good 100 feet down the street. Yeah, with enough people and widespread panic in that area, it's not going to be pretty. I hope and pray it doesn't get worse.

Your counters behind yahoo got the toll up to 151. Shame things like that stampede happen.

I just wonder what set it off. Videos leading up to it look like a huge crowd, but no panic or problems.

Something set it off.

This is what I've gathered from various places....

That area is "working class" and used to be a draw for Koreans who were into western culture...social media through various trends made the area more popular overtime elevating the area to a highly desirable place to live.

At the time a Halloween festival and/or party was going on.

Preceding the stampede disaster the people there got wind some western e-celeb, social media influencer type was going to be at some establishment right there and everyone bolted to see them causing the chaos.

quote:

The stampede took place on Saturday at around 10.22pm (local time) as Halloween crowds merged with weekend partygoers in the South Korean suburb of Itaewon, an area known for trendy bars, clubs and restaurants, as rumours swirled a local “unidentified celebrity” was in the area.

I’m calling bullshite on this. Chest compressions on a chicks legs, the guy posing for a picture. Nobody, regardless of culture, would do this or behave in this manner if something serious was happening.

No way…. The blood curdling screams and twisted faces while they writhed in pain says it was a painfully slow death.

There are videos in this thread of people literally being crushed to death and you’re calling BS on that because two people seem off to you in a still photo?

Fights are pretty common in that area. You have a bunch of testosterone charged men in their late teens, early twenties around copious amounts of alcohol and good looking women. They're bound to happen.

Someone must have been stabbed or shot and my money would be on the latter. It's not a common occurrence in Seoul to hear gunshots.

You never checked out TikTok have you?

Or heard of Chris Chan?

The amount of people taking videos of people dying and not trying to help in this situation is really disturbing
