Did you see the videos of the actual crush. People were screaming in pain.

Hell, crucifixion was considered torture by the Roman’s to how painful the asphyxiation process was m. Hell, they even built in partial seats to prolong the process for people they really didn’t like

Ok, so what I have been able to gather is this:

The city officials were expecting over 100,000 people to show up but did nothing for crowd control.

A Korean official claimed this could not have been prevented (fricker)

The alleyway where things happened has been blocked off in years past and was not this year for unknown reasons

What set the crush off was as people started being pushed into the alleyway for the crowd, some people tripped downhill deeper into the alleyway and more and more people kept being pushed over top of them

Ok, I just did a street view and I found that deeply disconcerting with how normal it looks versus the tragedy that happened there.

The one thing I want to know is what role the restaurant played. It’s entrance is at the entrance of the alley so theoretically if your dining at the restaurant, you’d have at least a partial view of the entrance and the situation deeper in the alleyway that people at street level can’t. I think it’s an interesting perspective at least

The street is sloped. People in front tripped and fell down. Creating a domino effect.

It’s what I imagine hell to be like.

There’s a video I won’t link where a woman’s head is poking out of a pile of bodies and she’s obviously dead, completely blue, month open and two feet away is another dead women completely blue with her mouth and eyes open kinda lying on top of a group of still living people and people in the bar are checking her pulse and just shaking their head. They look like ghosts.

I did figure out… so supposedly the reason they kept playing music at near by bars and clubs was they didn’t want a mass exodus of people leaving the clubs and making the situation even worse. People were told by bouncers they were not allowed to leave. There are stories from bars nearby also that never knew anything really happened at all.

Actually supposedly some police showed up within 2 minutes but it might have taken then time to understand the situation

I honestly feel for some of you, when shite like this happens in the US it's all boo hoo, but other places you only have jokes.

The loss of life is tragic no matter where it happens.

Does anyone worry about going to NFL games, college games/ concerts? Could this happen at such events?

Marcdi gras seems like a perfect storm.

Not sure the parallels between S. Korea and Japan, but I've been nearly crushed on trains in Japan. Just a typical every minute commuter train where the attendants with white gloves are cramming people in.
It is tragic for sure, but up until the chaos began, it probably seemed like a regular crowded night out on the town for the people.

Considering the proximity to a US military installation, there's a good chance US servicemembers may be part of the victims. That part of Seoul is a pretty international one where you will run into people from all over the world. There was a sizable Russian population there during my time there. They thought I was one of them.

It’s really insane, I read a whole passage on crowd surges after I saw this thread last night. Basically the crowd becomes a liquid with the back pushing the front forward, the back can’t see the front slowing down or walking into the side of a building so they just keep pressing onwards and everyone is packed like sardines so absolutely no way to fight the current except to just walk along with it. Something like this could technically happen anywhere there is a surge of people in an enclosed space. Once people start falling, more and more fall on top of them and they get interlocked like legos, I always assumed people died from being trampled, that’s the least likely cause.

I’ve seen several people claiming they left the area earlier in the night because they mentioned it felt too crowded and they were uncomfortable.

This does regularly happen at concerts and there are many examples of deaths from this, though usually not at this scale.

The most famous being The Station. People couldn’t exit because of the crush.

But hell, even like 7 years ago, a bunch of people in Germany died because over 3 times more people showed up to a music than they expected and thousands of people got trapped in a tunnel as the stadium was emptying out and more people were arranging for the next band

At sporting events? The most famous crush till now was at a soccer stadium in the 1980s where 94 people died I believe. The goalie was listening to cries of help as thousands of people were crushed against the fence keeping fans off the field. There’s a reason you no longer see those fences.

Modern sporting venues? They’re pretty highly regulated and researched so I don’t think there’s a large chance of this as this is somewhat planned for but if the right scenarios crop up, sure you should always be aware of your situation.

Now people running into the field? Or exiting from leaving the field? Yes. Absolutely. People still get hurt regularly from it and that’s why I continue to call people out for rushing the field

Good decision making. I hate crowds like this.

I was in a minor crush. Pretty sure no one got seriously hurt but it was pretty fricking horrifying. Thought I was going to end up being shoved underneath a car.

No lie, I did end up shitting myself . All the contents in my digestive track were discombobulated and it felt like my contents were pushed out.

Also, you do get picked up and you do move in waves. It is real scary.

I also experienced one, and I could not breathe. Pretty sure it was against a stage, and security had to pull people up onstage.

This happened to me and some friends in Nola for mardi gras. A fight broke out and I just remember following the crowd and as the crowd swayed to move to avoid the fight all you could do is do as everyone in front of you did sway and try and find a way to get out of the flow of the crowd. It was like we were stuck in a rip current and couldn't get out until some of the people in front were able to get out of the flow.
