A string of suicides (7 to 9) over a period of months.

Military.Com

quote:

The moves comes at the end of a month that saw three sailors aboard the ship die via suicide, after a previously undisclosed string of suicides going back to at least July of last year.

I’ve seen some reports the USS George Washington is known for bad conditions aboard the ship and complaints from sailors.

I don’t know how much validity is in those reports, or how much the conditions factor into the suicides, but supposedly they pre-date the recent string of suicides.

It's not the ship, it's the newer, softer, more pussified generation of sailors that can't deal with having to live in a berthing onboard.

Active duty suicides went up in all branches after - well you know….

Normal even in 80s for 2-3 suicides a year for a carrier and air wing 5500 people.

Maybe they stopped and realized who their boss was?

It's not gay when the ship's underway.

If they are that mentally weak, there is no place for them in the armed forces.

When you activity recruit and cater to gay people then instead of treating their mental illness you encourage it things like this happen.

If we ever get into a medium to large scale naval battle, we're going to take some pretty bad losses

They are in the yards in Newport News, Virginia (aka Bad Newz). It’s a shithole that I grew up in and left the week I graduated high school. The way the Navy treats their people comes to a head during extended yard periods. Unpopular stereotype is that younger people nowadays are a little more fragile.

I wonder if one or more just offed themselves because they knew it would trigger more training for the poor saps left behind. A solid "frick you" on the way out.

You know how they separate the men from the boys in the Navy? Scalding water and crowbars.

There are a few thousand guys on board.

My ship had less than 300 people and during an 18 month period there were three suicides (plus a couple of other guys that had to be sent off for mental breakdowns).

It happens.

Now throw in trannies etc. and it isn’t surprising to see the numbers rise even more.

This was rather predictable imho.

A ship with poor morale would see an even greater spike in these events. Just my .02.

Been there done that. It sucked.

That being said, young people today are more fragile imho.

It is probably a combination of the two.

According to the commanding officer, the ship currently has 422 sailors living on board. Since sailors typically do not receive an allowance for housing until the E-5 rank, those living on board a ship while it's in a shipyard tend to be the most junior crew members.

From 1938, with a rate of 40 per 100?000 service members, suicide rates among active-duty personnel in the US Army decreased to a low of 5 per 100?000 service members in 1945 (Figure).

This is an Army statistic, but considering it dropped from 40 to 5 per 100k from the beginning of the war (or right before the start of the war in 1938) to the end of the war, I sense some cooking of the books to make the number smaller to not disrupt morale.

But compare that high of 40 to now.

Nineteen out of every 100,000 sailors died by suicide in 2020, compared to members of the Army, which had the highest rate, at about 36 per 100,000, Pentagon statistics show.

Are the suicides amongst only those guys. If not, then it is not overly shocking.

Now if they are just amongst those 422, then they need to see if one of them has the last name Clinton, and what the deceased may have known.

That certainly wasn't the only assumption you made in your OP.
