Attributing fairly standard suicide rates to your favorite culture war bugabaoo because of some arm-chair theory is not exactly a hallmark of intelligence.

Same JAMA article I linked above.

quote:

During the Cold War (approximately 1945-1991), the rate generally stabilized in the low teens to midteens (ie, 10-15 per 100?000). The rate increased again during the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, increasing to 29.7 per 100?000 in 2012. From 2008 to present, the annual rate has remained within the range of 20.2 to 29.7 per 100?000.

Drawing a trendline over the course of history from WWII to now, you see reasonably expected increases in suicide rates during war time. During times of relative peace, the rate falls down to 20 per 100,000. If the NBC article I linked above is right, the 2020 rate of 19 per 100,000 is actually below the usual average.

They are in the yards in Newport News, Virginia (aka Bad Newz). It’s a shithole that I grew up in and left the week I graduated high school. The way the Navy treats their people comes to a head during extended yard periods. Unpopular stereotype is that younger people nowadays are a little more fragile.

Looks like there's one person in this thread who actually knows what they're talking about.

This ship is docked in one of the worst parts of Hampton Roads and Sailors are having to walk miles from the ship to their car(which many are having to live in). The one's lucky enough to live on the ship are rewarded with power outages and an issues with running water. Conditions for those sailors are awful and it's 100% on the navy.

We treat some prisoners better.

It's arm-chair theorizing. You see what appears to be a trend and ascribe a causal link without doing the leg work to figure out if the causal link actually exists.

The yahoo article blames living conditions

Have living conditions in the navy gotten better or worse since WW2?

Living conditions for Sailors in Newport News were better in WW2 than the current living conditions for these sailors.

I hope that clears things up for you.

Do you have any idea what it's like to live onboard as ship's company while a ship is being rehabbed in Hampton Roads shipyard?

It's quite obvious he has zero idea.

It's also quite obvious he has zero problems with announcing to the entire world just how fricking ignorant he is about it.

Are there any other countries who even have large scale navies?
