Are the suicides amongst only those guys. If not, then it is not overly shocking.

Now if they are just amongst those 422, then they need to see if one of them has the last name Clinton, and what the deceased may have known.

Not entirely clear. The article says 3 sailors “aboard the ship” committed suicide last month, and goes on to say there have been at least 5 suicides among sailors “assigned to the ship” in the past 10 months. It’s heavily implied by the article that these are sailors living on board, hence the Navy’s decision to move sailors to an offsite barracks.

The exact number of suicides seems to be disputed by various sources as well.

I thought this comment was interesting:
quote:

Smith told a sailor who had asked about living conditions that the Navy "probably could have done better to manage your expectations coming in here" before informing the crew that raising concerns should be done "with reasonable expectations and then understanding what ... what this is like."

"What you're not doing is sleeping in a foxhole like a Marine might be doing," he added.

I mean.. I get what he’s saying but the ship has been in dry dock since August 2017.

I don't know but it seems like working and living on an aircraft carrier would be a hellish existence. I took a tour of the de-activated one that sits in San Diego (Enterprise?). Went on the full tour with a guy who served on it for years and he was telling us all about what it was like.

Living hell and much respect to those who can do that job.

The Midway is in San Diego. Big difference between that ship and a Nimitz class carrier like the George Washington.

once again....for those who couldn't be bothered to read the thread.

I live down river from the ship.

I am the link.

Seriously....Google maps is free. This isn't a naval base with nearby barracks.

No place to hide on a carrier. Weak dicks/malcontents are exposed quickly. Going to sea is like going to prison for some. The mission is the only thing that matters, and you have to carry that focus everywhere...head on a swivel, check your six.

If 422 are berthed on the GW while in drydock, how do they handle 5,500 - 6,000 aboard while underway? I haven't served, but what makes being in a drydocked carrier in VA so terrible? Are repair crews running 24/7 creating an environment where it's impossible to get any rest?

I get the impression from a friend who served on a submarine that he was constantly on-duty, even when off-duty. I want to say he was getting about 3-4 hours uninterrupted (usually) of sleep per 24 hours. It was a bitch, but a manageable bitch.

Being out at sea with a ship full of men is probably a lot like prison, but worse.

A fully functional and crewed ship isn't the same as a ship that isn't functioning. This one has been plagued by setbacks and delays for a couple of years now. Power outages and running water have been a big problem on the boat from what's being reported. I can imagine it getting miserably hot inside the ship during the summer with no AC.

As I said earlier, there have also been reports of sailors having to sleep in their cars and having to walk a mile or two in every day through a miserable part of town full of drugged out homeless people.

Imagine all of that becoming your life for weeks or months at a time.

When those that are different cannot cope with said difference and instead rely on the rest of the world to pretend they are not different, things simply won’t end well.

I guess I just don't understand the logistics involved. I've worked at refineries and a Navy base, some in very sketchy areas. But I never had to walk a mile or two to my vehicle and certainly not beyond the fence line of the facility.

The Navy has junior enlisted personnel walking through the ghetto to sleep in their vehicles? I'm surprised that there haven't been 6 or 8 murders in 10 months.

Nobody is having to live in their cars bro.... they have barracks and other ships for enlisted housing - don't be rediculous. If you think NN is bad try the old porstmouth yard.... SHips always have the issues you describe too...

From the OP:
quote:

Capt. Brent Gaut announced that the ship will move 260 sailors "to an offsite barracks-type living arrangement on Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth" -- specifically, a Navy Gateway Inn and Suites -- starting Monday, according to a recording of the announcement reviewed by Military.com.

"We'll be able to expand that number at about 50 additional beds per week as we figure out exactly what is needed," Gaut continued.

but they weren't living in their cars... conditions on ship may have been tough but better than a car

That's part of the issue. It isn't a naval base. Fence line stops at the end of company property.

If this was just docked at base it would be different. They could put them up in some of the military housing on base at least.

Uh, yeah. They were. I know this for a fact as I am currently serving in the Navy and know people attached to that ship. It was so loud and hot onboard the GW that some of them took to living in their cars because it was more comfortable.

You mean Norfolk Naval Shipyard? Yeah it's in a shitty area too....but that isn't where the problem is. The problem is specifically the USS GW drydocked at NNSY.
