If you think NN is bad try the old porstmouth yard
You mean Norfolk Naval Shipyard? Yeah it's in a shitty area too....but that isn't where the problem is. The problem is specifically the USS GW drydocked at NNSY.
No The old portsmouth yard with dry docks - closed in 90s ... was in an absolute shithole.. every crew member had a place to stay.. if they slep in their cars it was by choice not HAVE to. A friend of mines kid is a an ABH on that ship - the yards do suck... and some of the sleeping in cars is waiting for shuttle to ship rather that walking 1.3 miles....

cool story bro. Tell the class how this is relevant to the GW dry docked in 2022.

Correct. See the above posts.

There aren't any shuttles taking them from their cars to the GW.

I get what he’s saying but the ship has been in dry dock since August 2017.
That is a long time, but I would imagine that a bunk is a bunk.
To be fair though, I only lived in those conditions for a couple of months.
The length of time may be truly be an issue though.

Sure, my point was just that nobody sleeps in a foxhole for 5 years. Seems like a bit of an apples to oranges comparison.

Pankreb there are certainly shuttles at shift change for yard birds and sailors
Cool truth a-hole

Yeah, it’s tough for those that are different when there are total pieces of shite like yourself.
Well, if you’re different in that way, perhaps don’t join the armed services where everyone is the same to some degree. Maybe the circus or freak show would be better. The total pieces of shite are those freaks among us who beg to be treated the same as normies. Ain’t gonna happen

Fair enough.
I lived on board my entire time while serving (only two years active). It didn’t bother me at all. However, as noted, only a mall portion of that was in dry dock.
That length of time, while in dry dock, is a different dynamic.

Sounds like we may be neighbors.
I can confirm the living conditions onboard GW are horrendous and have been for a while. The issues are not unique to GW. All carriers going through an extensive overhaul have these same conditions but usually the crew does not live onboard in this industrial environment.
The problem comes from delays which causes issues with the big picture schedule. When the Stennis came in for its overhaul, the GW crew had to leave Huntington Hall and the cheapest option was moving the GW crew onboard.
I do believe that this current generation coming into adulthood is not as mentally strong as previous generations. But their criticism into the living/work conditions is warranted.

I'll repeat this again.
There are no shuttles bringing sailors from the CVN parking in Newport News to the ship. You're more than welcome to provide direct evidence that says otherwise.
I do not care what your experiences were 30 years ago as they are absolutely irrelevant.

Please, keep going. This is an amazing look for you.
There are others in this thread that can vouch for everything I've said so far.

He's told you repeatedly what the conditions are like at the yard and on the GW, but you don't want to believe him.

There are shuttles that bring the crew that chooses to utilize it.
The problem is the shuttle runs from Chesapeake (~15 miles away). Which is ridiculous. If you live close, you have to fight through tunnel traffic for an hour, wait for the shuttle, then ride the shuttle back through the same tunnel for an hour.
What should be a 15 min commute turns into 2 1/2 hrs. Sending 5 hours a day getting to and from work is insane.

Newport News seems like New Orleans minus the FQ, uptown, and Lakeview.
I always hear about NN/tidewater area being a recruiting hotbed for VA Tech.

had no idea about that shuttle. I just knew they didn't shuttle people from the CVN lot to the yard.
And yeah that's nuts. Why on Earth would it come from Chesapeake? I could at least understand it coming from the Norfolk base. It would better to just go through the MMBT even though it's a longer distance.
Knowing damned well that tunnel will back up every single morning....no chance in hell would you plan on taking that and almost ensuring being late as hell to work.
