Just curious if it would be less macabre in say a $3K casket?
All kidding aside one of the best gifts you can give your children is paying for your own funeral years in advance.
We locked in the 2020 prices to have the family vault opened if the need arises.

One of my uncles was a millionaire and owned a little 200 acre farm which he loved.
Cancer took his life and before he died he asked the family to have him cremated and to spread his ashes over the land.
It was strange but they did it, no one in our family had done anything like that before.

My step-father did a pre-purchase at Seale in DS for an $1100 cremation. When mom died, I called Resthaven bc they were a couple blocks away. When I went in to make the arrangements, they told me $5,000 to cremate her. I told them I would have Seale come pick her up. They then suggested I talk to their Ascension Parish home. I drove to Gonzales to sign the paperwork for $1100. Resthaven then sent me an email saying that I should rest easy, they did the cremation in BR so my mother never had to move. They made me pick up the ashes in Gonzales though.
Cremation for me, and Alx is to scatter my ashes in Lac Ophelia.

Find someplace where it’s legal to do so and bury me straight in the dirt. No box. No embalming. They call it green burial. I just can’t do cremation. Burning would be one of the worst ways imaginable to leave this world. Even though the dead can’t feel pain, I still don’t want it happening to what’s left of me.
ETA my whole family seems to be moving toward cremation. The very old folks are still doing caskets, but everyone under age 80 yearns for the urn.

I have a friend who died day before yesterday in St. Louis...he was from Baton Rouge and was in ROTC with me.
He elected cremation and asked that his ashes be dumped in Lake Ponchatrain.

That is exactly what my late mother-in-law wanted for her ashes and about 2 months after they were returned to the family, we went out to the lake and found an appropriate spot with a favorable wind and dumped them in the lake.
Pay attention to the wind and you should be fine.

I will prepay for cremation and also disposal if my kids don’t want to hang onto any cremains. While cremation sounds terrifying, so does being stuck in a box underground. I’ve even said no funeral home service, not worth it and to gather at your home if you want a memory gathering.

Cremation for me. Burying people is fine if thats what they want but its insanely expensive and the end result is about the same. My dad passed away last month and it cost $1750 to cremate him and have a small gathering at the funeral home. The funeral director told my wife and myself that we could pay $1250 each and if we died tommorrow or 100 years from now the group that they belong to would cremate our remains and offer a similar small gathering. I handed him the 3% visa immediately. He also told us the cheapest traditional funeral they offered without grave opening and a vault was $7500 unless it was bought pre-need and it was $6750. Thats outlandish. I would much rather my kids get that $6250 than that old boy...he was nice enough but I don't know him from Adams house cat....

My MIL wants a casket and burial- she has a specific Life Insurance policy that will cover the cost. When we had to make the decision about her sister/my wife's aunt, my wife was very upset at the thought of cremation, but since nobody in the family had the money for embalming and a casket, we didn't really have a choice.
IIRC, basic embalming, casket, vault, digging the hole, sealing the vault and filling the hole was well over $10,000.
My parents have already filled out the paperwork to donate their bodies to science- I'm thankful for that, since I'm sure I'll be the one to handle all of it when the time comes.
I told my wife to cremate me- I hope she listens, but I'm sure she won't, as usual

My farmer when to a funeral in Ashley county Arkansas and was volunteered to drive the deceased in his 4wd to the cemetery. They put the guy in a refrigerator box and needed 4wd to get through the woods.

I mean they are basically the same industry. Both address the problem of what to do with a body after its died. You can have option A or option B but they both solve the same issue. And many funeral homes have crematoriums attached so they aren't totally separate entities often times.

I mean you realize people die every minute of every day right? The bodies have to go somewhere.
It is a noble industry although it does seem to be a bit old fashioned these days, although I couldn't tell you the reason why. It takes a unique breed of individual to devote his life to serving others in their darkest times and all that goes into it.

I look at Cremation the same way as Chris Rock looks at organ donation. It's for people with no faith at all. What if they figure out a way to bring people back from the dead. Now I ain't got no eyes....

Tomorrow afternoon I have to go to a "viewing" for one of my wife's former co-workers who I've seen only a couple of times. Really wish I didn't have to, but I'll do it for my wife.

That does not sound strange at all. If I were in his shoes I would have asked for the very same thing.
I live on a golf course. I told my wife to just spread my ashes in the rough of the fairway behind our house.
