Isbell’s Political views aside, he is a pretty talented artist. I wasn’t a huge fan of his latest album however.
And to all the older guys that have turned off country music because of the mainstream jackasses ruining Nashville, I’m sorry. You should give some of the guys that have been mentioned in this thread a listen. There is still great country music out there, and it’s really not hard to find, it’s just not going to get any radio play.
Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Turnpike Troubadours, Tyler Childers, Cody Jinks, and Whiskey Myers would be a good start to new country for some of y’all that think the genre is dead. It’s not, just the real country artists have gone underground for the most part.

I read the first two pages thinking this was jason aldean. I was mystified by everyone calling him a gifted songwriter

Absolutely.
It just doesn’t bother me as long as the music is good.
Hell one of my favorite bands has a song called “Mr. November” that was written for Obama. Song is badass too.
I’m sure if I went to a concert and they started preaching to me I’d be annoyed, but luckily (or unluckily), I don’t get to make many concerts these days, so I get to avoid that possibility.

To be honest, a ton of Texas country and americana folks are leftists, they just couldn't be too loud about it because the people who paid their bills were Texans and people who like Americana.
Isbell and Sturgill have a big hipster country following (in addition to all of us), which probably lessens the pressure to avoid misguided protest music.

Google “ Children of Children “ - watch the video - and you will know that Jason is not harming the genre. He’s entitled to his hopelessly destructive and sophomoric Unicorn Prog political views . His music stands on its own though. Just sayin.

That wasn't written for Obama. They just co-opted it when he ran for prez.
The National would almost certainly hate me irl

I don’t go to concerts where people preach politics. A Todd Snyder concert in Boulder years ago taught me that. No captive audience BS for me. But I do enjoy their music and critique it honestly on its own merits. Music is purity and truth to me, it resonates on such a personal level, and it has bonded my family together.
As you know, there is a strain of Conservatism that is overtly hostile to art . That doesn’t help Conservatism- in fact it makes it harder for us to compete in the larger culture. I’ve been fighting it my whole life, being in a family of musicians and having friends in the music industry. We can simultaneously love the music and scoff at the sophistry of the politics.

Yet we don’t get one of the down voters to respond.
I’m sorry literally having a PTSD because of my toothbrush.
Literally if y’all understand don’t respond and give the bitch and literally attention.

We downvoted you because you are obviously confusing Isbell with Jason Aldean

Never heard of this guy but he sounds like an ignorant fool.

DBT have always been a little bit gay with this kind of stuff.
Well, Patterson Hood and Jason Isbell have been.
It’s just so easy to be like that. Takes no real courage or thought.
Isbell is very talented, though. Dress Blues was an amazing and subtle anti-war song, and I loved it even when I supported those wars.

IMO, being a southern-based artist that goes around preaching progressive politics to a less than receptive audience takes a fair amount of courage. I sure as frick wouldn't do it.

Isbell, Sturgill, and Stapleton are the best thing to happen to country music in years.
Yeah, you forgot Margo Price.

“I do think part of my job is to let people know where I stand on those kinds of issues, and to defend people who aren’t white males like I am,” he said. “To defend my child, my wife, my friends who are afraid for themselves right now.
the struggle. he (and his former band DBT) are whiny bitches. I used to like Isbell. I have a hard time listening to him now. His last concert sucked too--he's become almost "new country" meets SJW, in a lot of ways.
When I first heard these melty lyrics, I knew we'd lost him. And why is it his job to let us know where he stands? I pay to hear his music, and if he wants to communicate his beliefs in that music, then more power to him. But I don't pay to "know where he stands." that's why these sorts of songs are so lame.
I used to think that this was my town
What a stupid thing to think
I hear you're fighting off a breakdown [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
I myself am on the brink [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
I used to want to be a real man
I don't know what that even means [TRANNIES, TRANNIES ERRRRWHERE!]
Now I just want you in my arms again
And we can search each other's dreams
I know you're tired
And you ain't sleeping well [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
Uninspired [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
And likely mad as hell [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again [HIGH ROAD??? L O L This whole song is speedin' down the low road]
I've heard enough of the white man's blues [POOR THING--HARD TO BE A RICH "ROCKER"
I've sang enough about myself [WELL STOP!!!]
So if you're looking for some bad news
You can find it somewhere else [IRONIC, I REALLY DO THINK]
Last year was a son of a bitch [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
For nearly everyone we know [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
But I ain't fighting with you down in the ditch [UHM, BUT SEE THIS SONG YOU TOOL]
I'll meet you up here on the road
I know you're tired [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
And you ain't sleeping well [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
Uninspired [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
And likely mad as hell [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN]
But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again
To a world you want to live in
We'll ride the ship down [MIXED METAPHOR--I THOUGHT WE WERE ON A ROAD-- A HIGH ONE]
Dumping buckets overboard
There can't be more of them than us [BECAUSE IT WAS HER TURN--AND I THOUGHT YOU WERE ON THE HIGH ROAD THAT DOESN'T INVOLVE US v. THEM]
There can't be more
I know you're tired
And you ain't sleeping well
Uninspired
And likely mad as hell
But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again
To a world you want to live in

quote:The man made a protest album in 1964 called "Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian" about the U.S. government's mistreatment of Native Americans. He wrote lyrics for it like "I would sing more of this land but all of God's children ain't free."
Sooooo.... are you saying Johnny Cash was a whiny liberal who’s music was just a bunch of gay lamentation, cuz it sounds like that’s what you’re saying..... if so, then I would like to respectfully disagree... I don’t ever remember JC stating he had “white privileged”.
He performed several (not just the two famous ones) concerts in prisons because he opposed mass incarceration and believed that many prisoners had long since been rehabilitated. ("I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.")
He wrote the anti-Vietnam song "What is truth?", which contained lyrics such as:
quote:
A little boy of three sittin' on the floor
Looks up and says, "Daddy, what is war?"
"son, that's when people fight and die"
The little boy of three says "Daddy, why?"
A young man of seventeen in Sunday school
Being taught the golden rule
And by the time another year has gone around
It may be his turn to lay his life down
Can you blame the voice of youth for asking
"What is truth?"
I'm not saying anything about Cash that his lyrics and his life didn't say themselves. I am saying that if you had been around in 1964, you would have been first in line to call him a "cuck."

Country music today is complete and utter crap as a lot. You may have one or two halfway decent ones, but they’re overshadowed by the raw sewage that is the bulk of the genre today. Most country artists from the 90’s back are utterly disgusted at what the industry has become, and they are right to be. The days of the Chris Ledoux, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Garth, Alabama, Blackhawk, John Michael Montgomery, and especially Hank and Waylon are long gone. Nobody knows how to sing raw anymore, songwriting is meaningless and shallow and doesn’t fit. It’s a travesty...
Who do you think started this brand of country we have nowadays?
quote:
Garth
I know it pains you to hear that, as it pains me because I love Garth Brooks’ music. But this whole arena country music we have now is due directly to Garth Brooks. Now, he didn’t play shitty music so he gets a somewhat pass, but he nevertheless is responsible for the type of shite country we have.
And furthermore, you keep talking shite about country music when I’ve seen probably 20 artists thrown out there in this thread that play actual country music. You pay no mind to them and probably won’t give them a listen because you’re too damn stubborn. What you don’t understand is that these artists and bands we’ve been throwing out to people like you would make the likes of Merle and Waylon and George Jones proud.
