Country Music is changing, Jason Isbell's White Man's World

The most noteworthy may have been “White Man’s World,” in which Isbell, one of the most critically lauded singers and songwriters of the new millennium, didn’t overtly rail against perceived injustices. Instead, he raised questions about his own life experience, about the privileges he’s enjoyed, where those privileges came from and who paid what price to create them.
quote:
“I’m a white man living on a white man’s street / I’ve got the bones of the red man under my feet / The highway runs through their burial grounds / Past the oceans of cotton,” Isbell, 39, sings in “White Man’s World.”
He continues, “I'm a white man looking in a black man's eyes / Wishing I'd never been one of the guys / Who pretended not to hear another white man's joke / Oh, the times ain't forgotten,” the final line referencing “Dixie,” Stephen Foster’s 19th century paean to what he perceived to be the glories of the Old South.
quote:
The song, Isbell told The Times last year, was inspired by 2016’s presidential election.
quote:
“I think as a society we’re still making a lot of progress,” said Isbell, sitting in one of the upstairs pews. “I think just as many people or more people are getting treated unfairly by law enforcement [today] as there were 20, 30 or 40 years ago. We just find out more about it now.”
quote:
“I do think part of my job is to let people know where I stand on those kinds of issues, and to defend people who aren’t white males like I am,” he said. “To defend my child, my wife, my friends who are afraid for themselves right now.
quote:
“I’m not going to get kicked out of the country,” Isbell added. “I’m 15th-generation American. But the fact that people pay me for my opinion — and they do, whether they realize it or not; that’s what you’re paying for, whether you buy a ticket to a show or whether you buy a record — I think it makes me responsible … I can’t stay completely silent on those things.”

He does not know thy audience

Another reason not to listen to that garbage. Most of today’s country is just that.

For the life of me, I don't understand how he's so popular. I'm not implying that I necessarily dislike his music, but his body of work is just not that good to garner the admiration he has received.

Well, if nothing else his production and marketing company's should be fired.
RIP to a lot of money ol boy is not gonna make now.

His music isnt "today's country". Far from it. He doesnt sing about cold beer, truck beds, and back roads.
Hes one of my favorites. Awesome songwriter, but this one seems way off from him.

Never heard of him. Not going to pay for his opinion. Good for him though trolling rednecks. This should end well for him.

And his audience isn’t the typical country audience.
Isbell is an all time songwriter. I don’t agree with this song, but who cares honestly.

The song sucks and his new album was really disappointing, but Isbell is nothing like "most of today's country." His other 4 solo albums were phenomenal and mostly apolitical. His fine arse wife supposedly got him all SJWy.

Not really new. Garth Brooks did "We Shall Be Free" more than two decades ago.

Well, since I listen to actual country music half of the time and I've never heard of him....I'm going to say t I doubt he is really a country music singer. They really need to come up with a new genre for some of today's stuff. I can't hardly stand the "country" radio stations any more. They've literally gotten worse than rap, which is impressive in a way.

That's not his audience.

Nice hot take. Isbell, Sturgill, and Stapleton are the best thing to happen to country music in years.
