Did people cry this much when Johnny Cash released "Man In Black"?
Funny to see people complain about Isbell while bringing up old outlaw types like Cash, Waylon, Willie, etc. Y'all forget they were pretty socially progressive for their time too.
Guys like Isbell and Sturgill would fit right in with the old outlaw country stars. They're the ones carrying on that legacy.

But this whole arena country music we have now is due directly to Garth Brooks.
Hacks trying to be Garth Brooks are what destroyed mainstream country.

Going to get nothing but crickets from this, but you’re exactly right. But seriously, Isbell wrote one song that, if you listen to it, is just an expression of his own life’s experiences. When he plays it live, tons of people walk out, but he doesn’t care. He doesn’t preach about it, doesn’t get butthurt, and at the end of the song, he usually just says, “thanks for listening to that one.”
I’m a very conservative person, and don’t agree with him on this song, but if you seriously can’t handle that, then you are 100% a snowflake.

Where does Brad Paisley fit on the country spectrum? Is he Bro country or outlaw/renegade? I don’t think he’s either. Maybe somewhere in the middle?

please post the lyrics to Johnny Cash's functional equivalent of Isbell's "High Road," and then we'll debate.
I've been seeing/listening to Isbell/DBT their whole careers, and it wasn't until he went pseudo-stadium and started this blatantly partisan junk that I lost interest. Oh, and there was the #BLM sandwich board the DBTs had on stage during their concert this spring. That too.
I generally follow the Alice Cooper rule: "If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are."
But at some point the overt political BS just becomes a turn off.
Take the actual high road, instead of just virtue signallng that you are.

IMO, being a southern-based artist that goes around preaching progressive politics to a less than receptive audience takes a fair amount of courage. I sure as frick wouldn't do it.
I could certainly be wrong, but I assume that most of their core audience are educated enough not to get fighting mad over some lyrics that don’t align with their political opinions.
Maybe Isbell has gone too for here for some of his fans. I guess we will see.

His politics suck and that song sucks, but honestly I doubt that I am politically aligned with many if not most of the artists I listen to. The rest of that album is pretty decent. He is a talented song writer and I’ll take talent over the garbage dirt road, beer can, mud tire, tan leg, bonfire bullshite that comprises 99% of everything else out there today. Sturgill is a huge liberal and he is in the same boat. Stapleton is pretty conservative and he is in a league of his own above these two anyway.

i'm beginning to agree.
I LOVED Southeastern, and I got to see Isbell play in some very small venues. And then Something More Than Free had some incredible songs (Children of Children and 24 Frames) and some really shitty ones. I never considered Isbell to be a douche through this point. Then I heard High Road and just SMDH, listened to the rest of Nashville sound and said, "meh," and then saw him at the FOX Atlanta a few months ago, and all the luster wore off.
oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

"A country artist wrote a song with a left wing point of view!?" is equivalent to the equally moronic "A white person wore a Chinese style prom dress!?"

What songs does he sing? I know this is an OT classic, but I swear, I have never heard of this guys name before.

I'm a Sicilian from New Orleans. I don't listen much to country music, nor do I understand what the Anglo, Irish, German, Dutch and Scandinavian people mean when they claim to be burdened with White Privilege.
I do wish them all the best, but, it seems like self-immolation to me.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Brad Paisley’s. Don’t get me wrong, he plays a great guitar, very Bakersfield sounding like Merle’s. I think he started out pretty traditional country but he’s moved to the bro country in the last few years in my mind. Keep in mind, I don’t really listen to mainstream country music anymore thanks to my Sirius and Spotify subscriptions so I could be wrong.

I am 7th or 8th just in Texas... and my family was in America in the 1600s so I am likely 15th or higher too.

I like mud on the tires and alcohol. Two of my favorite Paisley songs.

Jason Isbell sold out to the NPR crowd. Bold strategy. Hope he saved his money.

If I was on tweeter I'd send him out a tweet and tell him I listen to country music to be entertained.
Don't want to be lectured by some social justice weenie.
What's happened to country music?
It used to be "Well I drunk the day my mom got out of prison...."

No doubt about that. The music is catered to doing mass arena tours and teenage girls. Not for bars and the working man. I don’t hate em for making a buck because those motherfrickers are absolutely making a gazillion dollars doing what they’re doing, but it’s no doubt ruined country music radio. That’s why you have to get out of FM radio and get Sirius and turn it to Outlaw Country if you want to hear real country that’s new. I would also like to add that a Spotify premium subscription is a big help in finding good country.
