What songs does he sing? I know this is an OT classic, but I swear, I have never heard of this guys name before.

He's Alt Country, different genre.

Maybe Isbell has gone too for here for some of his fans. I guess we will see.
It’s the highest any of his albums have charted on release (with those singles being the bulk of the pre release content)
It won him a Grammy
And is going to become his highest selling album any day now.
He’s playing bigger venues at higher ticket cost
It may have alienated some but he’s taken a step forward in popularity regardless

Isbell grew up like 5 miles from me and is my age (we're both 39). He was not "privileged" whatsoever. Pretty sure his parents were white trash 18-20 year olds barely making it when he was born. He went to a crappy public school. I used to know a girl he dated really well (she was in my HS class and also made it in Nashville herself).
For him to claim he is "privileged" is flat out retarded. There were like 2 black people in the whole redneck two bit town where he grew up, so he knows jack shite about "the black man's plight."
And, as someone said, his audience isn't the typical country crowd. It's more alternative/folk type of stuff.

Think about a guy like Steve Earle. He is a complete no-shite communist now, but I can ignore that and still listen to his older stuff like copperhead road, guitar town, etc. Even “Billy Austin”, which is his ode to the death penalty is a really good song whether you agree with his position or not. Drugs completely fried him in the early 90’s and he lost his mind. I went to a show about 5 yrs ago in NOLA and, while his band was talented, he spent most of the show preaching politics and then begrudgingly made a statement “Now let me get these out of the way since I know this is all half of you came here for” and played a montage of about 4 of his classics that he meshed together and played extremely fast. Then, as he had called it, half the place emptied out lol. He genuinely loathed his former self, the self that made him famous. Now he lives in Brooklyn and idolizes people like Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. ALL of his songs now are political and he basically plays at occupy protest rally’s and vegan festivals. Really tragic.

I didn’t expect this song to go over well with these red necks.

This album has been out for over a year, and you hillbillies are still finding new ways to melt over it.

Again, if you don't like prog politics, then don't listen to music. I've said it a zillion times in threads like this:
I don’t know. I’ve seen a lot of great concerts. Never noticed any prog filth talking points. Never heard a singer tell me about white privilege or any of that nonsense. Of course I haven’t been to a concert in the past few years and I realize the liberals have gone off the deep end since then.

Last time I saw Isbell was not too long before the 2016 election, and he didn't say a word about politics. I don't care about his shitty politics so long as it doesn't consume him and find its way into every song he does. I'm mostly disappointed that his last album just wasn't that good.
I know people say Sturgill is super political, and I'm sure he's pretty far left, but I've really only heard him sing/talk about being anti-war, which I don't find to be a major stance of either the Rs or Ds. I haven't heard any song of his that's nearly as out there as White Man's World.
And people are making a lot of good recommendations for Isbell songs, but they're all of his slow stuff. That's what he's best at, but he did just happen to make one of the GOAT southern rock songs of all time (while with DBT):

A country artist wrote a song with a left wing point of view!?" is equivalent to the equally moronic "A white person wore a Chinese style prom dress!?"
The difference is, no one gives a shite about the country music example and no one is remotely offended by it. We just think he's a douchebag.

No one is melting except apparently you and other tools on here using straw man arguments about this thread.
We are analyzing his own words from his interview in the context of his music and others in his genre.

The wife and I went to a Cody Jinks concert last year. No politics, just drinking and good live music. This guy is a dumbass for releasing a country song with that shite. He's essentially saying "frick you" to most of his audience.

lol. I can’t almost taste your white guilt tears thru my computer screen
He’ll get an uptick in listens and album sales now while he’s getting press and backed by media liberal. But once his time in the spotlight deminishes and since he’s now turned off his country music audience. I suspect he’ll change his tune soon or be looking for a new job
