George Rogers Clark was trying to take a fort held by the British during the Revolution.

During a truce in the siege, a returning war party of Native Americans allied with the British unknowingly walked into the town and were captured by Clark’s men.

The Execution: Clark had four of the captives tomahawked (hatchet-killed) in plain sight of the fort's walls, after which their bodies were scalped and thrown into the river. (a book i read said it was six, hands tied, and had their brains bashed in with a war club).

Clark used this brutal act as psychological warfare. He wanted to show the British garrison that no relief was coming and that any resistance would result in no mercy. He also intended to demonstrate to local Native American tribes that the British could not protect them.

Demoralized by the aggressive tactics, the illusion of a much larger American force, and dwindling options, Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton surrendered Fort Sackville on February 25, 1779

If anyone wants to read up on how they used to do it, I'd highly recommend The Faithful Executioner. Franz Schmidt, the executioner of Nuremberg, carried out 395 executions over his 45 year career that ranged from the late 16th to early 17th century. He performed everything from hangings to breaking at the wheel.

The book that uses excerpts from the diary he kept of all his assignments, is fascinating. It goes into detail not only about the executions themselves, but also the social and political realities of being an executioner in Europe during this period - which was not a desirable position. Schmidt's father was forced into the role when he was a child, he inherited it, and worked his entire life to see that his children were elevated above it by building a perfect reputation. Before Schmidt, executioners were pariahs, a necessary evil. They couldn't live inside the city walls, they couldn't join guilds, they couldn't even set foot in churches. Throughout his career, Schmidt changed the perception of his profession, even becoming a bit of a physician in Nuremberg during his retirement due to his extensive knowledge of the human anatomy. It's a great read.
