re: Could a modern supercar complete a 500 mile Nascar oval race?

Yes, most supercars have some type of dry sump oiling system, but if you are talking about running 500 miles on a large, highbanked oval they would eventually have oiling problems. A nascar engines oiling system is different even from a road course to a oval. On an oval the scavenges in the oil pan are placed to account for the centrifugal force and they also run as many as 5 scavenges on an oval. If you were talking about running on a road course I wouldn’t imagine there being any problems.

There would be a massive difference in fuel consumption between it's top speed and a steady 180mph run. The HP needed would probably double between those 2 speeds. But again, we are talking fuel which is easily overcome.

I don’t know a lot about this stuff. Are pushrods still used bc they are sturdy and reliable? Are the cars steel and heavy for safety?

NASCAR is not a "prototype" racing series. The rules are designed to spur competition, not innovation.

Correct.
But supercars are not built for the NASCAR circuit, either. They would wipe the floor at the road courses on pace alone, but your average oval track, no way.

I can see a GT3 doing it as Porsche build quality is superb as other super car manufactures have issues with overheating and catching fire. A street car isn't made for that level of flat out endurance driving and would need some tweaks.

That wasn't the question you posted. You asked "could a modern supercar complete a 500 mile Nascar oval race" and the answer is clearly yes.
I'm assuming that one would not be competitive, since otherwise the major race teams would simply buy a supercar and run it. But the question is completion, not competitiveness.

That was a fantastic read.

I don't think some of you realize how "low-tech" NASCAR is.
100% false.
I sat at a table with a team of engineers from Mahle- you know, the guys that make pistons for Nascar, Formula 1, and things like that.
Mind you, this was in the Ferrari suite at the inaugural F1 race in Austin a few years ago. I commented to them, “I bet it’s really a challenge for you guys to work on these really small, high rev engines with all the rules that F1 has.”. Their lead guys response, “Nascar is the worst for all of us- the rules are so restrictive, the advanced engineering that goes into something that looks normal, but is actually not, is mind numbing”.

Not all interstates are 75...

???
I would bet they'd get better fuel mileage.
Given the same size fuel tank as what a Nascar has and Racing slicks I think a 720S, GT2 RS, Ford GT would lap the pack.
Yep, supercar manufacturers have no experience in anything oval...

That thing might fall apart at a bumpy track like Atlanta.

The supercars would eat up tires much more quickly than purpose-built race cars. They would also have to stop for fuel all the time. It would also require more lengthy pit stops than NASCAR teams pump out.
i came here to post 2 wors
tires
fuel
your post is 100% correct. there are other issues but these 2 would destroy the supercar
*ETA: those supercars eat up their tires in like 10 minutes of flat out throttle

No they don’t. That’s a 10 year old stat for the Bugatti @250+ MPH on original Michelin Pilot sport cups. They’re 3 generations past that tire now and these cars wouldn’t be using street tires on a race track.

Say like an Aventador or Bugatti Chiron or LaFerrari. It wouldn’t win, but could it run flat out for that long without the motor blowing? Assuming normal pit stops for fuel and tires.
I think people forgot the orginal question.
Yeah, it seems like they could survive it. The 24 hour races are dang hard on race cars and many of those are very close to stock. Sure, not all cars survive but I think most make it past the 500 mile mark before cratering.

Road courses aren't big ovals though, they aren't pushing the extreme the entire lap.
NASCAR's that are purpose built for these lengths of races have issue completing it. Wouldn't want to test it with a supercar that was mine that is for sure.
Show piece supercars really aren't meant to be driven much, they become expensive paper weights with very little miles.
