With all of these "leaders" sitting around on vacation for 3 years and The Advocate clearly preferring to be more of a "press release" company than an actual newspaper.....

....who is going to be the "check" against these un-elected leaders payed by taxpayers to sit around and do nothing for 3 years?

With all the forward thinking going on in BR, I see them adding some much needed brick and mortar stores like Sears, Radio Shack and Blockbuster along the $50 million bus route.

Has anyone else noticed they have taken to calling the zoo the "North Baton Rouge Zoo"?

It is a shame to see them act so territorial. Turning this into a power grab only assures there will be little worth grabbing when all is said and done.

Yep I've noticed.
And....it's bullshite. Being that South Baton Rouge overwhelmingly pays for it.
Like everything else in BR I suppose.

The community's themselves have to want to change, and need a leader showing a good work ethic is a start. I'm not sure we'll see that kind of change anytime soon though.

When the mayor, the police chief and the DA have one of their photo ops to clean up a block in the hood; I find it comical that the TV stations film show the city officials and volunteers working hard to clean up and you can see residents in the picture sitting on the porch or watching the workers as if they are overseers.

I might not have much, but how hard is it to pick up trash, cut weeds and do basic clean up around your house?

This is called gentrification and most black people in black neighborhoods get really angry about it.

Gary must've missed the memo.

Next to impossible. If everyone spent 20 minutes today picking up trash outside their homes today, north BR would look exponentially better tomorrow

That’s the M.O. for all of these stupid fricking economic development districts. They raise taxes (hotel, sales, property) to pay “executives.” What a fricking joke.

They are apparently going to do nothing.

But this is what I would do:

1. Improve the hardscape, pavement, lighting, signage, and lighting in the area that's actually functional (around Tony's Seafood and the Delmont Village area along with key intersection (Evangeline, Hollywood, Choctaw, and Mohican St.)

2. Overlay zoning district for Plank Road to update requirements for aesthetics, parking, and facades

3. Offer TIF for commercial/retail business along Plank to improve their buildings/parking areas to fit the new overlay zoning requirements (or for new businesses to invest there).

See if that shows any improvement for 5-6 years. If it does, expand the TIF and focus farther up and down Plank. If it doesn't, pull the plug. The targeted focus area has to be very narrow at first, then expand outward.

Plank is an ideal point of focus because of the relatively few number of big apartment complexes in the area. If it improves, it would be ideal for smaller investors to buy and rehabilitate the smaller rental homes in the area. There's also a legit regional anchor (Tony's Seafood) that's been in business there for decades.

They were in the red within the first 6 months of beginning the tax and actually said they needed more money

How the frick does a brand new organization with a new line of tax revenue go into the red instantly?

Redevelopment of North Baton Rouge is way too important to be handled by this particular group of morons. 3 years and they don't even have a fricking plan???

I believe the reason was because they said they had to hire more people. Basically all their funding is going to overhead and salaries with no money for actual redevelopment. At least, that was how I read it anyway.

Is anyone in the Baton Rouge media going to ask what % of this group's funding goes towards concrete/asphalt and what goes towards salaries?

Let's all take a moment to appreciate this amazing NBR business. They run a great operation over there. I never feel unsafe or have trouble getting in and out of there.
