Colorado HOA Fines Homeowner for Dead Grass in the Middle of a Drought
Homeowners Associations (HOAs) often get a bad rap for enforcing strict rules and levying hefty fines. However, a lot of people love the way HOAs help maintain property values by making sure that homeowners are keeping up with their home and lawn care, which is why so many folks opt to move into these kinds of neighborhoods.
But one Colorado woman is saying that her HOA is going too far after they sent her a letter about the state of her grass recently. According to her, the HOA wanted her to fix her brown and dying lawn. The only problem? Paulette Piazza says she’s under watering restrictions due to the state’s ongoing drought.

I had to go to an HOA meeting two years ago at a condo in Gulf Shores and they had to have a police officer present at this thing because it got so out of hand the year before.

Colorado law states HOA's can't fine residents for dead or dying grass in a drought if they are watering the maximum allowed.
This is a non story. The lady should tell the HOA to shove it.

HOAs are a social psychology phenomenon. Those studies of people (post WW2/Nazi effect) and obedience (where they were led to believe (falsely) that they were turning up electric shock voltage on people to punish them for failing whatever)…
study showed that many of those people did turn up the shock. They were obedient. A shockingly high number of the time!

We got a $2,500 fine in the mail from our HOA for painting our house without going through the proper review process to get approval for the color we chose. Our house was white... and we repainted it white.
Thankfully, my company offers a legal plan and I forwarded it to the attorney's office. They found so many discrepancies in the HOA bylaws it was unreal. The attorney called to share how much joy he took in messing with HOA's. In the end the HOA rescinded the fine and paid our attorney fee. There was a line buried in there where if you paint your house the same color it's considered maintenance and there was no need to follow the approval process. Game, blouses.

After I have a few more millions in my IRA, I'm going to tour the country and buy properties in neighborhoods governed by the most ridiculous, obsessive, control-freak HOAs I can find.
I will then hire obnoxious, completely self-unaware middle-aged men to inhabit those properties and incentivize them to piss off the HOA Karens as much as possible: Pink flamingo flocks, Bass Pro shop fish mailboxes, broken down trucks in the front yard, 19 pit bulls, florescent green fence, whatever they can think of.
I'll put cameras everywhere and sit back to watch the drama.
Should be pretty funny.

as with many (hell, most) organizations, HOAs are only as good or awful as the actual human beings in charge of them. An HOA is simply a legal entity on paper and filed in court. The people running them are typically the real shitheads.

I think I'm in the minority in that I wish my HOA would go further.... not THIS far, but mine does literally nothing.
I live in a mostly nice gated neighborhood, but one street backs up to a shopping center which I think made property at one time affordable for those would would generally be more comfortable in a trailer park.
There is a house with grass that reaches knee high at times, another house with an old broken down car street parked with the back windshield smashed out, another house where the kids apparently are unaware they have a back yard which is fine except the front yard/drive way is perpetually littered with toys, a plastic pool and literal trash. The worst of it though is a family who thinks it's adorable to have a 20 ft or so skeleton up year round.... it's sunbleached and falling apart as it's been there for the better part of a decade.
I know people who were selling on a nice street and had one buyer pull out cause they drove around and saw the street in question. Our HOA is literally useless

do y'all employ a management company? If so it sounds like they're the ones being useless, if y'all do employ them you need to have your HOA board notify them of your problems and give them a timeline to fix or you'll drop their arse and hire another. They're a dime a dozen so I'm sure you can find others nearby.

Why don’t you join the HOA board and start cleaning up your neighborhood?
