My company is so fricking cheap that they cap us at 18%. I usually end up throwing a few bucks in cash out on top. I don’t like feeling like a cheap arse when I get good service.

One company I resell is ran by Australians. When they would expense meal for customers, they wouldn’t cover the tip because it’s not their culture.

Some sales people would take out large groups of customers and leave a 20% tip and then have to pay out of pocket.

Same at a bar of the girl simply hands me a beer. - 0%. I’m already paying $5 for a Miller Lite. I’m not giving you an extra dollar.
I usually do a dollar a beer to ensure she keeps coming around if the place gets busy. If I lived in a place with more options I'd just go to another bar if the service was shitty but only a handful of bars around here.

Depending on they are defining as young and old I call bullshite. I guarantee you me at 50 is tipping way more than any 25 year Olds. Now if you're talking about retired folks who live on a budget well fk them for calling them out these people live on a strict budget.

This isn't news. Whenever we go out to eat with my parents my dad always makes a big deal out of asking my mom to figure out the tip and then they sit and analyze the service and sh!t and then pats himself on the back of he tips 18% and let's everyone know they think the server did a good job and so got a "big" tip. And that's after having their son wait tables for years too. Old people are just weird

A 20 percent tip for good service at a sit down restaurant seems about right.

I tip bartenders at 30-50% at places I frequently go to, which inevitably reaches an equilibrium where I don't get charged for several drinks and they still get a fat tip (and I'm given immediate priority regardless of how busy it is).

There is occasionally wisdom on the OT.

I found, as a rule, younger people tipped better than older people.

But if I was going to get a ridiculously large tip, it'd generally be some white guy over 45 paying.

I'm old and tip the customary 20-25%. My 26 yo son doesn't like the whole idea of tipping and is particularly offended by this new movement to handing the customer an ipad with pre-set tips starting at 15%.
He might tip 20% under the right circumstances but refuses to tip for the little bullshite things that so many of us have slid into now. Handing him a beer over the bar, a cup of coffee or a donut? He's offended at the whole concept of the customer paying the owner's overhead. And making you fiddle with an ipad and tip to close your check? He won't do it.
And he's right.

Sit down meals, I start at 18% baseline. It can go up or down depending on service.

To go orders and/or drinks at a bar, $1 per meal or drink.

15% if the service was avoidably terrible.
20% is standard.
Usually I tip 25% or greater.

So doing a good job is only worth 5%.

You're not reading what I posted.

20% is standard. Which means that's the baseline I'll tip. But then I said I usually give 25% or more.

My 17 year old son took a girl on a date to an Italian place at Canyon Lake.

I told him to make sure he tipped well because girls pay attention to shite like that.

He gave a $40 tip on a $80 tab.

It’s also expected before service more which makes no sense. You get tipped for work performed. If you don’t perform you don’t get tipped.

Did you know that originally, tipping was done in advance? It morphed over time.

Tip - to insure promptness.

I normally would have just passed this by, but the seemingly incorrect usage of insure/ensure made me curious. Looks like that acronym explanation is apocryphal: LINK /

I tip based on quality of service. I never tip a certain % just because society says to.
