Because they can’t do math and are pussies afraid to tell people making $12/hour “no”

Not sure why 15% became 18% and then 20%

Double the tax mentality. Sales tax is close to 10% now.

Sure, when people think of the baby boomers, fiscal responsibility is the first thing they think of.

Tax X 2. Good all around formula for fair tipping in my opinion. Thats what we do.

If my sit down lunch is in the $14-17 range, I just pay an even 20 cash. I drink plain water, so it's normally around there.

$20-30 meal, I charge and give a $5 cash tip

That’s because Boomers and Gen Xers were taught that 15% was the norm.

Gen Xer here, I’ve always known it to be at least 20%.

I don’t know anyone in my age group who tips less than this amount unless shitty service.

I think it’s hilarious that the OT will sit at the bar and tip 20% to a bartender to open a $200 bottle and bring them a $30 small small plate with commentary water.

People are stupid

I tip bartenders at 30-50% at places I frequently go to, which inevitably reaches an equilibrium where I don't get charged for several drinks and they still get a fat tip (and I'm given immediate priority regardless of how busy it is).

Servers at true sit-downs get 20-30%.

Flat rate of $3-10 for counter service; amount depends if I ordered one thing or several.

I don't mind throwing money to folks as long as they are mildly competent.

As someone with a side gig in rideshare, by my observations, older people are not only more likely to tip, but they're more likely to tip bigger amounts.

commentary water

I will be damned if I pay good money for a meal only to have my water give play-by-play and talk down to me whilst I eat it. Every man has his line, and that is my line.

As long as I get good service, I’ll leave 20%. If they stand out, I’ll leave more. Very rarely will I go below 20%. Im not that picky. Just get my order right, keep the drinks filled, and check on us every so often. But, and while it’s rare, I’ve left as little as a penny if the service is egregiously poor. But like I said, that’s a very rare occurrence.

My company is so fricking cheap that they cap us at 18%. I usually end up throwing a few bucks in cash out on top. I don’t like feeling like a cheap arse when I get good service.

The irony here is a lot of those are older people tipping, just a younger person leaving the money
