I tip 20% on average service.

Go out of your way and make the evening nice for everyone and I'll tip out of my way.

If you are horrible I will tip 15% and just let you know how horrible you are. The grace comes from me knowing you only make 2.13) hour.

But if you work at Salad Station and simply ring me up: I provide my meal, drink and throw away my trash?

A dollar or two for cleaning the empty table that isn't done enough.

As someone with a side gig in rideshare, by my observations, older people are not only more likely to tip, but they're more likely to tip bigger amounts.

Interesting.

I think it's because, compared to say, an average college student, older people understand the struggle to pay bills and respect the hustle more than someone who has Mommy/Daddy paying all of the bills for him/her.

Is tipping 0% more "responsible" than tipping less than 15% but more than 0%? Just trying to figure out how this responsibility scale works.

But younger people tip more at restaurants and less for ride sharing,

That’s what is interesting. Explain that.

There's a reason why. Hence my comment.

If I was taking a stab at it, I would say that the yutes want to tip well as a rule. However, they have a better understanding regarding the very, very low wage of servers, but likely not as good of an understanding on the real "wage" of rideshare drivers.

I dated a girl once that was poor af but always tipped obscene amounts.

Like, we’d go to a cupcake shop and pay $12 or something and she’d tip $12 because she “knows it’s hard for everyone”.

I just said ok

Had she ever been a server? Everyone I know who served tables for any appreciable amount of time treat tipping like a religion.

Gen Xer here, I’ve always known it to be at least 20%. I don’t know anyone in my age group who tips less than this amount unless shitty service.

Maybe so, if true then you were ahead of your time and we have you to blame for starting this upward trend in tipping %’s.

quote:

During the 1950s, people commonly tipped 10% of the bill. By the 1970s and 1980s, that percentage had jumped to 15%. In 2023, people typically tip anywhere from 15% to 25%. Consumers on average said they tipped more than 21%, according to a Creditcards.com survey in May 2022.

I think the base wage has just gotten more laughably low over time, and tips have risen to mentally compensate.

That graph ends in 2013 or so, but I'll note that the federal tipped minimum wage is still $2.13. So that slope has only gotten more aggressive in the last decade. Have prices also gone up, so the same percentage tip is larger? Sure. But psychology is what it is.

Bingo. I think they think we're making like the vast majority of what they pay, when we're making maybbbbeee 60%, but often less.

i think that's respectable. I think when you have to work for tips, often people understand the "struggle" more and are more willing to tip.

Makes sense. My mom always said she doesn’t tip on the tax. I always thought that was cheap. Now as I age I find her voice in the back of my head, calling to me as I fill out the tip.

She did yeah, and she still was.

I just thought it was odd that she, too, had to “struggle” and was making her own struggle more difficult

I consider myself a reasonably sophisticated consumer, and I couldn't have even ballparked that figure. I know servers are making 95%+ of their wage from tips. I have zero idea how tips factor into rideshare, food delivery, etc, etc. Just don't have the same contextual knowledge as I do for servers.
