As a former leftist that hung out with these types of "people" for decades, I cannot repeat this enough:
This is more than just being able to kill kids and get away with it. They want to be able to kill anyone they please, and get away with it. Look at how progressives treat criminals that they think are on their side. They release them in blue cities with no charges. Hell, they are still celebrating the guy that killed the innocent girl on the bus a year ago.
They want to be able to kill YOU.

Here's what I don't understand.
If she really was/is suicidal then why not say, "I did it - give me the death penalty."
If she is no longer suicidal or mentally ill then the sheer horror of the knowledge that she brutally killed her children should make her want to plead guilty.
