I've hauled stuff to scrap yards here in metro ATL, and they seem to have all been run by gentlemen with "eastern European" accents. While I was required to show my ID to get my check, I would imagine if a person wanted to, they could easily bypass this regulation.

I have also seen people have the cat welded to the vehicle making it nearly impossible to steal.

They melt down the cats, and extract the precious metals. Likely then sell the metals back to manufacturers to make new cats, who sells them back to you.....So you are helping the environment by recycling your old cat.

Please direct me to a scrap yard that buys these. I have a pair of CC’s of mine that I changed myself. I’ve contacted every scrap yard and every muffler shop in the BR area and no one wants them. I didn’t even tell them what vehicle they came from.

The problem with this “solution” is the false assumption that car theft results in prison time. It’s 2021 and “Soft on Crime” is now the norm

Which is a nice way of saying “hard on neighborhoods”.
Look for more gated parking lots with security. Basically more like Istanbul or Johannesburg and less like your typical American city.

There was a Bassmaster Elite series event in Orange , TX this year and the thieves got 15 or so Tundra's

Are Tundra’s exhaust and converter easier to dismantle or something?

Yes. The cats are well back and easy to cut the pipe on each end with a sawzall.
On GM's the cats are up near the exhaust manifolds so much more difficult to cut off due to a lack of access.

i think this is one of those industries where you need to know a guy and normal people don't

I know more about this than I care to admit.
Here's the problem:
-Cat. Conv. for the most part don't have a serial number. Very difficult to trace/identify if located.
-In LA, the sale of them is basically unregulated and "buyers" are basically driving the market with impunity.
-There is no specific law for the theft of them. It just falls under "Theft" and while most are of felony value, the courts only see it as a "non-violent" offense. This leads to pitiful sentences (if any) and doesn't deter repeat offenders.
-Very lucrative for the criminal. A good cordless Sawzall will have a cat. conv. off under a minute. No jack necessary on pickup trucks. For very little effort they are rewarded with a couple hundred bucks from a buyer who doesn't care who they are and has no obligation to identify them.
What you can do:
-Encase your cat. conv. in steel. (only kinda joking)
-Use high temp paint in a florescent color and spray it. Adding "GPS Tracked" lettering is next level.
-Laser etch a unique number/your phone number/ or your local PDs phone number on it.
-Lobby your representatives for new laws with harsher sentences for thieves and laws aimed at holding the BUYERS accountable.
